I can't comment on a comparison of the two. I have the premier and I still had to buy extra posts at tractor supply. The distance between posts is just too far and the net sags. It was a big disappointment in that regard. Mine is wired, no solar. I read that unless it is fully charged with...
The hens keep eating the grower feed. Haven't seen much by way of chicks eating the layer pellets....yet.
Any tricks to keep them from eating each other's food? Is there any harm to egg production if the hens eat grower feed? Any harm to chicks if they eat layer pellets?
Thanks in advance.
Last year I ordered 8 buff pullets, and 2 were roosters. I was suspicious early on. The ones with shorter wing feathers and minimal tail feather growth at 2 weeks both turned out to be boys. I gave one away but kept the one that was better with the ladies.
Two to Three week old male:

I have had two orders from Meyer, both were positive experiences. First order I ordered 8 BO pullets, unfortunately two were young men but we ended up keeping one. Didn't lose any. Second order was 15 pullets. So far all look like ladies, only one loss which I believe was a rare breed who...
I have had to deal with pasty butt from my shipped hatchery chicks. They don't like it but I run their little bottoms under warm water till the poop is soft and then gently wipe away. Then I dry them in a soft washcloth. It's better to upset them a little to prevent their untimely demise from...
It doesn't even take 5 minutes, but sometimes I get home late due to running kids to activities and it is open an hour or two after dark. For example, tonight is trick or treating. My girls will not go in until good and ready, so if we leave before they go in, the door will be open after dark...
I live in Maine where it gets pretty cold in the winter. I have a very nice coop, though it is not heated. Any advice for cold weather chicken care to get me through my first winter with chickens?
The coop is nicer and more finished than our house right now ;)
Thanks for the responses. I am looking to have something close the door for when I am running late. We have too many hungry critters here in Maine.
Your chicks are over crowded. They need about 1/2 to 1 sq foot the first few weeks, needing more than that fairly quickly. I don't think the heat will get to the lower cages if placed above the top cages, at least not enough.
I am sure others with more experience will have more advice.
