Well, I was unceremoniously served a summons for a hearing concerning my chicken flock of 5 hens and 1 rooster which I had in Haines City Fl. city limits for 2 years up until the point of the summons. The code enforcer didn't even bother to give me a preliminary notice/post telling me I was in...
The original post is from 2013. An updated picture of the same birds would do wonders for identifying them. I'm sure the owner knows which ones are roos and which are hens by now. : )
I noticed that you are talking about using Easter Eggers to create Olive Eggers. The problem with this is that EE's are not pure breds but rather crosses of Ameraucana's or Araucana's with whatever breed the hatchery or breeder decides to cross them with. Since they are not pure bred they don't...
Eggs from your own home grown flock are always so much better all around in flavor and nice shells etc. Eggs from factory farms don't ever get close to being as good. Enjoy your flock KinKongChicken. I love your coop and your birds are gorgeous. Did they all turn out to be pullets or is that...
KingKongChicken the danger of leaving real eggs in each nesting box to encourage further egg laying in the same boxes is in the possibility of the eggs going bad. But the danger also lies in leaving the eggs in the nesting boxes and taking the chance a chicken will break one of the eggs...
Hens can be so finicky about nest boxes. I have 3 nest boxes but I once watched three of my 5 hens all climbing into one small nest box at the same time to lay. I didn't even know 3 hens could crawl into and fit into one tiny space like that. Fortunately I was there and removed two of the hens...
Thank-you very much for the information Jak2002003 and Lightchick..I already give him grit which I thought had calcium in it but I'll check again to see if it does. . If not I can get some small grain calcium fortified chick grit from the feed store to add to his diet. I'm wondering if he flew...
My diamond dove's beak has recently began growing out curved at the very tips, bottom one way and top the other. He is over 3 years old and never had a problem with this until the last 2 months. He won't touch the cuttle fish bone that has been strapped to the side of his cage since I...
Is it possible the white and black one could just be a very badly colored hatchery Light Brahma? It would help if we had full body pics of it showing legs and all over body conformation and color.
Hens will usually just lay an egg and then get up and go about their normal chicken routine of eating, scratching, dust bathing and begging for treats when humans get near the run. Sometimes a hen will go broody. When a hen goes broody her hormone levels change and she basically goes into egg...
The method in the link may work for some but the method I use of holding my rooster down has worked like a charm. I tried a modified method to the one in the link and it didn't work as the rooster just mistook it for another rooster battling him so he was ready and primed for battle anytime...
Cute birds. At 13 weeks old it won't be long before they begin laying. Maybe anytime after 16 or 17 weeks they may be laying you some breakfast. : ) Welcome to chicken ownership. I just made it through my first year as a new chicken owner and find BYC an indispensable tool to help learn about...
Is the egg pictured the egg your black one laid? It actually seems to have a very dark olive color. If you compare it to a brown egg you may notice it has a greenish tinge. If not and the olive color is just from the way the picture shows..well I'm sorry she didn't turn out to be OE. : (
I would say at 10 weeks and the bird in question still showing a comb like that it's a pullet. A roo would be showing a pinker comb comprised of 3 parallel rows of vertical circular bumps that look reminiscent of peas (a pea comb). Yours isn't showing that, so I am voting pullet.
That naked one would be right at home in a nudist colony.... and it looks just about as good as the majority of humans who frequent those establishments too...which is why I will never go to a nudist colony. If I had an entire flock of the nude ones I would put a "Warning: Nudist colony ahead"...
