Hello to everyone! I am from Southwestern Michigan, a little town called Riverside. I have been married for almost 30 years, 2 children, and a grandaughter. I have been raising chickens for about 3 years now. I love it, and have no problem selling my eggs. I have 36 chickens, 2 coops and two...
Here is what I did. Just pick up the crate, empty, replace with new straw and put back. I have since added a slanted mini roof over it to keep them from roosting and pooping thru the top of the crate.
I have 23 birds, all hens. I use 4 50lb bags a month. The cost is about $55.00 a month. I sell approximately 13 dozen eggs a week for $2.00 a dozen. So I spend $55.00, make $104.00 and clear about $49.00 month.
I got 23 eggs out of 23 chickens. I put a light in their coop in September and it comes on every morning at 4:30 am and stays on till 8:00 am. It is also only 20 degrees out with blowing and drifting snow.
Here is what I used.
used a 1x12x10 pine board
1x4x10 pine board
4 cement blocks
attached 1x4 to 1x12 sat that on the blocks placed the milk crates on their sides
just empty to clean fill with new straw and replace
What do you do when a hen starts sitting on the eggs everyday. We have quite a tussle before she leaves the nest. She is a large Buff Orpington. Just started doing this last week. I have no roosters!
This is a removable system. Just set the milk crates on a 1x12x10 pine board with a 1x4x10 lip. When you want to clean, just lift up dump out and replace straw.
Take a 1"x12"x10' pine board and attach a 1"x4"x10' pine to the front edge. Sit this on 4 cinder blocks and place your crates right on it. When you want to clean, just lift out the crates empty and refill with straw. Very easy and inexpensive set-up.
