    New Silkie/Cochin Chicks!

I have a Janoel 24 I quite like if you're on a budget. Also heard good things about the future right 360 and brinsea if you're up for spending a bit more.

    eggs that are days younger

If you only have the one incubator there's not much you can do as you'll need to go into lockdown on day 18 for your older eggs. If the younger ones are more than day 14 they shouldn't have too much trouble with not being turned. Its a pity about the high humidity but the older eggs might get...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Ok, so I've finally got around to posting an update. From my eggs I have two older boys who are over coloured, too much black on the breast, one younger boy who looks pretty good so far and a younger girl who is ok but again a bit over marked with a lot of black in the hackles. I am keeping one...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Mira is quite the handsome young gentleman I think 3/4 of my last hatch are cockerels too but they seem to be colouring up ok so far. Hatch day has started again including some eggs I got from another breeder. So far we have 5, but most look to be from the black hens she added to get pen to...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Yes mille fleur is still new so there s a way to go before it all gets set in stone. Congrats on your new hatches @Fluffer Butters it will be interesting to see how they grow out. The older two are certainly getting there with the colour, overmarked if anything which is a problem I have on some...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Finally update time for me! I set a dozen eggs earlier this month, unfortunately only 3 made it to lockdown and two of those hatched so we have some babies! I have some more under a broody hen at my aunt and uncles that should hatch in a couple of days too. I see the red in Miras comb, but it is...

    Mille Fleur Bantam Cochins

Hi @jeberhard you're welcome to join other working on this project colour here https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/mille-fleur-bantam-cochin-spangled-pekin-project.1480257/ it's really hard to tell who will end up with the best colouring until they're a year or so old. I'd be inclined to...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Would you breed the other colours into your MF flock to improve type, or work on a few colours at once? In Australia, the best types I have seen have all been blacks, I think they've just had so much longer to work on shape. I would probably avoid using white in an MF program personally as it...

    Chickens that rarely lay?

I don't know much about rooster bachelor flocks but this article came up today: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/rooster-flocks.72998/?utm_source=threadloom&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ed27&utm_content=iss135

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

It's amazing how much the mille fleurs change over time, its so great that you're documenting them. Yes, I know what you mean with a few different lines to start with it's going to take a while to get anything consistent happening, but I wanted to start this way so there's good genetic diversity...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Lovely photos! This bird (not mine) won best in show of our local agricultural show earlier in the year, so I guess this is what I'm aiming for- basically a nice round volleyball shape with a head. It's a long way off, but who knows in 10, 20, 30 years I might be getting close! In other news I...

    Chickens that rarely lay?

Another thing you might want to try if you live rurally is a bachelor flock. If you house them separate to your hens usually a flock of roosters gets along quite well. You can often get them free/cheap, they're very beautiful and they certainly won't lay to many eggs!

    Splash feathering?

Yes, a splash would need both parents to carry blue and it appears neither does. I can't help you as to what it is but i think @Amer is very good with genetics.

    Chickens that rarely lay?

Something that goes broody a lot like silkies or bantam cochins.

Adding the blue will be a long process, as all the blues will be solid and just split MF. If you breed them back to MF you should get some blue MF, but you'll also get some missing genes so some will just be blue mottle with leakage and things like that ie a big mess. Would be interesting but...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

Ok photo update. My poor angry pancake little red after being kicked off the nest. I'd really like her to be laying at the end of the month but I'm not sure how I'll go. Still the best hen I have. Gregory Peck at the back watches over some of his ladies, including Millie in the middle, whose...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

@Birdie2019 I am sorry for the loss of Jesse. I am glad little Mira is turning out to be a hen for you and hopefully she shapes up nicely. I don't know anyone else to tag in here but I hope we do get more members. Fingers crossed for more eggs from Casey for you to help build up numbers. I know...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

For what it's worth I still think she looks like a pullet. I find my Pekins are vey fast maturing so I'd expect to see more comb by now. Loving the updates! My ladies are still finishing up their molt though I'm starting to get the occasional egg now. I probably won't hatch until September...

Mille fleur bantam cochin spangled pekin project

I've heard of the crushed tums before so hope it works for you. Also have my fingers crossed for lots of other mira and coles for you before the end of the season. It doesn't help that pekins aren't the most prolific layers. I'm only just starting to get eggs now but not often. Hoping to set...

    Silkie roo x frizzle hen?

Some people call them satins but they probably need more silkie in them to be true satins. A proper satin should be a perfect silkie but with regular feathers.
