She doesn't smell sour at all. I couldn't smell a thing. The swelling is very large and completely soft. It feels very much like a squishing a balloon. I massaged it a while this morning and it makes me nervous it will pop. I was of course very gentle.
Thanks everyone! So she is pooping and it looks normal as far as I can tell. I have given her yogurt and water and she is eating/drinking both. I'm headed to town in a few hours and will pick up the medication.
I thought she wouldn't be eating or drinking - any clues there?
@azygous Wow, your article is very informative! Thank you! Hopefully I can get some medication and try that. So at this point, you would recommend giving her the medication twice daily and allowing her all the food and water she would like, correct?
Thank you everyone for responding. I'm just now seeing these responses. I thought I would get an email alert when someone responded but I didn't. So I read an article online about sour crop and am following their protocol. They said to keep her away from feed and water for 12hrs or overnight and...
Hello,
We have a pullet who is approximately 7 weeks old and has something wrong with its chest. I've noticed it for a while and it continues to worsen. It feel and looks like a balloon on the front of her chest. She has difficulty walking and nearly gets trampled over by the other chicks. Any...
Some more info: She is one of 9 chickens in our flock. We have them in a fairly large run. None of the other chickens have this problem but some of them do have small bare patches on their backs from pecking .
Hey everyone!
I have a chicken with feathers on it's rear. Hopefully you can see that I'm talking about. They are completely missing in some spots and thinned in others. Does anyone know what can cause this?
TIA!
Our pullets are only 15weeks old so I'm pretty sure they aren't laying yet. ;) I'd just like to know which of them is laying all the eggs and if I should be worried that the other one hasn't laid any eggs since they've been here.
Also, any tips on getting bigger eggs? They are pretty small. My friend isn't sure how old they are because she has several batches. They are either 1 or 2 years old.
We recently got a few new girls from a friend who was downsizing her flock. In the last 8 days, we've gotten 6 eggs. None of our pullets are old enough the lay yet so this has been so this has been quite exciting around our place!
All of the eggs have been the exact same color and size so I'm...
Thanks everyone for your comments! I hadn't thought a hawk would leave the body; I expected it to haul the whole thing off. Sounds like either our cat or a hawk is the most likely predator.
I don't know what all of you think but when I purchased my chicks, the guy at the farm store said his...
Ugh, I'm so sad. I lost a pullet today. So here's the story. We let the chicks out today into their run for the first time. They are 7 weeks old. I was right beside them in the garden all morning. I was in the house in the afternoon for several hours and went back out this evening (6pm) and one...
Wondering breed and sex of 5- 6 week chick. It's the golden red/white one. It was suppose to be a New Hampshire Red but doesn't look like it to me. I posted it several weeks ago and someone suggested red sexlink cockerel. I thought I'd ask again now that it's older.
TIA!
@blackdog043 Thanks for the suggestion. The handles lock and come with a key so I think it'll be fairly safe in that regard.
@Frazzemrat1 Yes, I think coyotes will be our main concern. We used to see them around here but since we've had our saint Bernard, I haven't seen any. I'm sure they are...
