    I live in Maine, so we do get a bit colder, usually into the negatives. I always use pine shavings as insulation as well as bedding, and chickens do snuggle when roosting. When we had a chicken tractor, I put some leftover reflective insulation in, which reflects the heat back in. It's like...

    I live in Maine, but I second this. Pine shavings are the way to go, and I am unsure where you get yours but we like to get the larger pine flakes from Tractor Supply. Straw/hay is also A PAIN to clean out in the duck coop, because it will clump and then freeze to the bottom of the coop...

    Generally I rehome my bad roosters to someone who takes them in for freezer camp. I however have been lucky enough with only two bad ones in my ten years of keeping chickens.
