Congrats on the soon to be new chicks! I have one of the cookies and cream, she's a hoot!

    Ainawgsd's farm chickens

With the buckeye cockerels we processed a few weeks ago we've baked, air fried, and stir fried. The legs have more texture than cornishX, but they're not chewy.

    Ainawgsd's farm chickens

Well, the left foot actually was very rewarding. The right foot is gonna be a headache. I think the infection is all thick cheesy stuff, I got some out but its still super swollen. Also, we lost a buckeye pullet to a freak accident. She was fine this morning, and I'm pretty sure she ran to...

    What breed is this?

Not sure what whittni sees specifically but i can tell you why I think EE. For me, it's the head shape. She doesn't have a lot of facial feathers, but more than a normal non-bearded chicken. Her face reminds me a bit of my EE Rose. I'd say the ameraucana/australorp is the father. My guess is...

    Ainawgsd's farm chickens

Ah nuts! It's double bumblefoot 😑The right foot is by far the worst But she has a scab on the left foot too. I only brought enough bandage material for one foot, so we cleaned and wrapped the right foot. Tomorrow I think we'll go out during daylight and do a longer soak and a more thorough...

    Ainawgsd's farm chickens

Uh oh, pretty sure the Rose has bumblefoot. Her right foot is swollen and she's limping ever so slightly. Naturally, she's the most flighty chicken on the farm!

Official BYC Poll: Who’s Your Worst Chicken Predator of All Time?

We don't have them here, but I'm going to vote bear because they can literally tear a coop apart. Most of our devastating losses have been to raccoons, but as clever as they are it's usually not too difficult to keep them out. The first time was definitely our fault, we forgot to secure the coop...

    Brahmas gender

I'm also leaning cockerel on the large black mottled. That's an awful lot of color for 12 weeks, given that brahma are slower to mature. The smallest has female specific partridge coloring so I'm 100% sure pullet for that one. The third one could go either way. If it's mottled partridge the...

I culled my first cockerel, now what?

Crock pots are amazing! I have two large ones that we use all the time, especially when everyone will be out of the house all day. It's super convenient for soups and stews. And the ceramic crock can be replaced if it gets cracked (ask me how i know  )

    Sapphire Olive Egger....pullet or cockerel?

I would be shocked if those turned out to be pullets. At 7 weeks it'll probably be another 5-6 weeks before you start to see male specific feathering.

    Brahma pullet with swollen leg

I agree, it looks like an angular limb deformity. I had a chicken with this deformity this spring. He was smaller than the rest right from the start, kinda scrungly looking even at (probably slightly less than) 1 day old. He always ate just as enthusiastically as the other chicks but didn't...

    Partridge, porcelain what is he?

Porcelain partridge is just gold partridge with (two copies of) the lavender gene. Lavender dilutes both black and red pigment to light grey and pale yellow/gold respectively. This bird is neither lavender nor partridge. He looks like a mixed color (the parents were different colors, maybe...

    Hen or Rooster?

Agree, definitely a pullet. At 5 months a male would have thin, pointy saddle feathers and this birds feathers are all rounded. I would also expect the comb and wattles to be bigger and brighter red. Looks like a black sexlink, although she could be a black orpington crossed with a buff or red...

    Roosters or Hens?

All three of them have female specific coloration. Their combs are getting redder because they're getting close to laying.
