Got out to the farm and did a coop clean out today! I also attached some 2x4 wire fencing to the bottom of the roost because  someone keeps laying her eggs in the back corner!

I also got pictures of the coop and run (shhh...I know it still needs some work)

Big day at the farm today. We winnowed the buckeye cockerels down to the top 5. Which left us with 14 boys for freezer camp. We put 56 pounds of chicken in the freezer/fridge.

Also, of the 14 cockerels we processed, only one had a normal uropygeal (preen) gland! The other 13 had a double or bifurcated gland.

I'll admit, I had to retreat to Wiki for this one!

It seems an inefficient location; just one, in the most awkward spot imaginable to me. (Instead of one under each wing, etc.)

You know...that is so true! I never gave it much thought but you're right. Watching my hens stretch and reach their preen gland at the base of their tail is pretty awkward.

The buckeyes are shaping up quite nicely.

One of the two malines cockerels we're keeping. Not sure how many of those missing feathers are from other birds plucking and how many are from hands accidentally plucking when husband and 16yo had to catch him up and put him in the coop after dark.

Speaking of after dark, found this guy crawling around the little coop the other night when I went to put the chickens to bed.

And I'm sad to report that Domino has molted out her white eyebrow. Oh well, she's still one of the nicest two malines pullets.

Limu's babies are enormous now! I think the younger 2 malines cockerels and 3 of the buckeye cockerels will be headed to freezer camp this weekend
