What age to let chickens out to forage ?

I was also wondering.....my first batch of chickens were not let out to range until they were older as I was concerned about my dog attacking them. Now that I know she and our pup we added are not chicken killers we got more chicks this year. They are 15 weeks old or so and am coming up to time...

Wanted to update a bit of the info I posted earlier.....I ordered my regular tobacco flavored juice from Smokey Mountain Vapor and it came in COMPLETELY different than what it was before. I am so horrified and disappointed! I called and asked where the juice was that I had always used and he...

    Cleaning the Run

Make sure the sand you purchase does not have arsenic in it. We put in a block walk way and the bag of sand had a warning on the label NOT to be used as play sand as it contained arsenic. WHY I have NO IDEA! Anyway just double check to be certain you are getting the right kind of sand. If you...

What the heck- having a rash of egg binding here- why?!

I had a round of this as well several months ago. I had 2 hens eggbind at the same time on their first egg. I culled them. It seemed to me from the advice I recieved here on BYC that once they bind they tend to bind again over and over. The birds were in distress and very uncomfortable. I...

Mothers and parents I need your help please!

If she checks out good on the sinus issues I agree with Newfoundland's advice. Of laying her back down over and over again with no communication.

Mothers and parents I need your help please!

I would pursue seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor and have them check it out. I was never told by a regular doctor that I had a problem with my sinuses until I went to an ENT for my tonsils and was told my sinuses were terrible! He said "I could have a heyday with your sinuses"! I did have...

Mothers and parents I need your help please!

Has your doctor checked her sinuses? I ask because I have a difficult time sleeping without waking, I fall alsleep breathing through my mouth, as I cannot get enough air through my nose because my sinus passages are very tight. During the night I wake because I have begun breathing through my...

Feeling sorry for hen who seems to be an outcast

I do not have any advice. I feel your pain! I also have a hen that none of the other hens want around. If she comes close to the flock they will chase her off. They pick on her at night to try and get her to leave the roost area. It is really difficult to watch.

Getting rid of my rooster! :(

Thank You! I did not eat him. It was a battle trying to get ahold of him. He was cackling , the hens were cackling and running. It was caos! I am sure his adreline was topped out. I had him and attempted to cut his throat twice and my knife would not even scratch him. So I ran and got my tree...

at what age do chicks start going in at night?

I did close them up in the roost area. They went there as soon as they were feathered to go outside. On warm days I would take them out and put them in the range pen and then back to the roost at night. I have only been letting them in with the regular flock for 3 days. I was hoping they would...

Do brooding hens need to be isolated?

I would definetly isolate a broody. I had one broody doing a very diligent job of sitting. I didn't know what was going on until about day 8 on the eggs..... The other hens would come in and peck her relentlessly until she woud leave the nest. They would lay their egg and leave. The broody got...

Yeah I would think the feather folicle, just like a human hair folicle, would be gone. But who knows she may suprise us all! It will awesome if she heals back healthy and and feels good again. She is VERY lucky the turkey was there and you went to check on them when you did!

O my lord... I have nothing else to say... Chicken an turkey injurie *GRAHPIC TO THE MAX*!!!!!!

I don't know for sure, but I do not think the feathers will grow back. Only because my hen got bitten by a dog and it pulled the feathers out and tore up some of her skin. They never grew back. But maybe on her head it might be different????

at what age do chicks start going in at night?

Thank you! I may try that if they don't catch on soon. I have a chicken tractor so any light would have to run off extension cords. Going to build a more permenant coop soon, electricity is high on my list!

at what age do chicks start going in at night?

Mine sat inside the run tonight screeching. They knew that they shouldn't be outside but I guess did not know where to go. So I put them up AGAIN tonight! Hopefully they get it soon. I am glad you asked the question I was going to ask the same thing.

Lock your coop and run up

Liamthechicken I am sorry you lost your Polly! I lock up my chickens at night. I let them out first thing in the morning, they go to the roost on their own everyday and I go out and shut the door. It doesn't take much time and I know my chickens are safe for the night.
