so does my Hen Turkey, her name is Tyson, and she controls the chicken yard!
I've got a dozen chickens, mostly R.I.Reds, but Tyson now that she is 25 lbs and full grown she rules the roost!
All the chickens go to roost first (to get a place I guess) and then Tyson comes in and picks her spot...
I have my 5 drakes & 3 hens (Pekins) and even though they have had a duck house for 6+ months they refuse/won't sleep in it at all.....even when the snow is coming down hard & the temp is below 20!
They just tuck their head under their wing, pull up their feet and wait out the storm.
Of course...
Straw will just get yucky and heavy! Sand, dri-stall or something similar to dry up the mud helps alot. unfortuately we have 20 ducks and though their run is huge it is constantly muddy especially since it's rainy alot. I had a system where they didn't get their water all over that helped keep...

if I'm feeding at night inside, I put water inside. feed's dry and they need water to process it properly. but no indoor pond, that's for sure.
Our heated water pail is just outside the door of the duck house, they all seem to want to "choke it down" most times anyway, and when they...
PS I DON"T have any water in the duck house (wood structure)
ALL water is outside, heated bucket for the winter for drinking, too small by design for swimming!
might submerge a tub with a sinking heater for winter.

To ALL duck loving folks....
I have to agree with the ones who have posted about feeding at dusk.....with ducks it is all about routine.....routine....routine....
Feeding at dusk in their pen or "duck house" what ever that is seems to work best for most ducks.
Mine are all Pekins, both Drakes &...
Hello,
Well 2 dead poulets, (black chickens) both the same day and both in the same fenced in area.
when I found them in the afternoon after work....no heads, breast looks gone and almost all the in-nerds gone. The other 6 didn't seem to have any concern...so it must of happened "early" and this...
Hello,
Well I just adopted 2 more Pekins, 1 a drake & 1 a hen to go along with my 4 others Pekins, 3 drakes & a hen.....
The recently adopted ones are named Bonny & Clyde (by the SPCA) because they escaped a nature preserve and were rounded up by the S.P.C.A.
First of all...These two have...
Hello list,
Well it been 95-100 each day and even though the chickens have a (hot) breeze & there is shade in the chicken yard in the form of a large tree, I have sprayed my flock with a water mist from the garden hose AFTER the water has cooled down flowing out of the hose.
"Nothing madder than...
Hello,
I think I am gonna use your "design" since I am needing a new duck home.
By the way everything you write is pretty correct having had ducks in the past go many a winter with snow & cold & ALL feed & water is outside.
They don't care....as long as the water is not frozen, and the feed is...
Hello,
Well yesterday one of my 4 Pekins did actually fly off the ground for about 15 yards, and 2-3 feet high.....then came down.
That was after a good run with all wings aflappin'.....once up gravity takes over.
Guess I need to increase the feed abit!

Hello,
Well I don't know..... ducks, water, mud, Sun, dry, poop, water, mud....you get the picture.
One person wrote on another list that when they built the duck house they concreted the floor and put in a drain in the center to make for easily cleaning.
I am thinking very seriously of doing...
Hello Duck lovers....
My 4 Pekins love the mud, mud puddles, and bit of water, it doesn't have to be a farm pond.....just a mud hole and do they get muddy....but after awhile they find water or if it is dry they go to the pond. Yes all that "driilin" which I think they do out of fun/habit...
Hello,
I got these Peking ducks from the SPCA 3/4 grown now almost fully grown....I think they have NEVER seen a farm pond. They are scared I think.
My wife & I have been "herding" them to the pond to swim....they are scared of the pond, we finally have to almost push them in, they will suddenly...
I also have 4 new almost full grown Pekins (white domestics) that won't go to "bed" so we "herd" them into the cage in area each night before dusk/dark.
There is lots of water on the property so "bathing" is everywhere.
I would herd the duck in...if the goose don't care.
