They have a very clean coop, and while I haven't been able to let them outside much lately the windows are always open so ventilation is adequate. My chickens were taken care of by a friend of mine for a month a couple years ago, it's possible that he caught something from one of their birds...
My rooster has had a small amount of clear watery discharge periodically coming from his eyes for the past few months. There's no swelling and there's nothing stuck in his eyes. At first I thought it was a sort of mild infection, but antibiotic ointment didn't clear it up for any longer than if...
Basically what I'm asking is, do you think my biosecurity is sufficient? I have boots and clothes I only wear over there any never around my birds, and shower when I get home. Is there anything else i can be doing?
But since the adult chickens who live in the immediate vicinity of them are healthy, my chickens are likely safe? I will keep taking the precautions I have been, of course. Now that the possibility is opened up that this isn't Marek's at all, I'm not sure what to think.
Thank you for your input. That is strange, I wonder what could really be going on. Next time I'm there I'll get some pictures and video of him trying to move. He's not very thin, either. And eats and drinks as much as he should. There is one other young bird around his age that recently started...
Are they sick and showing symptoms of Marek's, or do you think they're just carrying it while appearing healthy themselves? A couple years ago my friend actually took care of my chickens for me and they were living with his general chicken population, where Marek's had a presence and does every...
I'm not over there every day so I haven't seen exactly how he has progressed day to day, but over the course of a couple months he went from walking with a limp to his bad leg being completely inert. Whenever I'm over there now I can move that leg freely with no resistance on his part, and when...
Not an emergency so I didn't want to pollute the emergencies section with this thread, I just have a question. Has anyone here ever had an adult chicken get Marek's? Specifically through indirect means (taking dander home with you on your clothes). I help a friend with their animals often and...
How large of a risk of zinc toxicity would you guys say there is if they ingest paint that's chipped off from an electrocoated steel cage? I will get them a stainless steel or wooden cage as soon as I can, but it will be at least a couple of weeks.
At work I have to touch a lot of galvanized metal surfaces, and I noticed one day when I negated to wear gloves my right hand had some black ground into the cracks in the skin. Some of it may be dirt, but I'm sure some of it is from the metal cans I'm constantly handling. I have no way of...
Normally I give them the mixed flock crumble with much lower calcium content, and oyster shell separately for my hen. He usually stays out of it. I'll definitely consider game bird feed as an option.
Nothing but layer crumble and pellets. Very frustrating, since last week they specifically told me they would have the mixed flock on the 22nd. I wasn't expecting to run out of it.
It looks pretty much identical to the mixed flock crumble they usually eat, they have no hesitance. Out of curiosity, how do you get the two month figure? I know there are people who give their roosters layer ration for years along with their hens, and they outwardly seem fine but die senseless...
The people I buy chicken food from aren't going to have any mixed flock food in until Friday, all I have is layer crumble. Will any harm come to my rooster if he has to eat it for a couple days? I know the higher calcium content is hard on their kidneys . I am going to give them scrambled eggs...
It did wash away on it's own after he drank a few times. I'm guessing it's probably not a good idea to use open dishes for food and water while you're using permethrin poultry dust? I know it has relatively low toxicity to birds, still not something you would want them drinking though. I'm...
Kind of a weird situation. I rubbed diatomaceous earth into my birds' feathers to control a lice problem and prevent it from getting worse, and after preening a bit my rooster has a small clump of it stuck right next to the actual opening of his nostril. The opening is too narrow to get at with...
That's what I had expected, why cleaning the guns themselves is also an issue. I wouldn't want to get any residue from the primers on my hands, though it's not like it's invisible. I'll definitely get some of those lead test swabs just for peace of mind, thank you.
It's mostly 7.62x39 and .38 special hollowpoints (the .38 specials are not jacketed) that wind up in the living room, no one here does any reloading though so that's a plus. But they are definitely lead bullets. I keep everything of mine in the safe when it's not being used and clean guns...
I guess I'm just worried that washing my hands isn't good enough. Or I wash my hands, but then go on to touch surfaces that had ammunition on them/someone else touched who had lead on their hands. Maybe I'm being irrational, I don't know.
My whole family likes to shoot, so there's people handling ammunition in the living room pretty regularly. I try not to as much as I can, and dilligently wash my hands before I go feed or interact with my chickens regardless if I've been handling ammunition. Am I putting my birds at any serious...
