I've done three batches now and I have to say sometimes it is a little confusing. There are always some that are clearly boys i.e. less definition in the strips, redder head and very small eyeliner, very white bellies....but I've had a one or two each hatch that I just wasn't sure about and keep...
I know all sorts of people who bought EEs and raise them to POL only to be disappointed because they lay a brown egg. The draw of an EE is those blue or green eggs, so to feed a bird for months only to have yet another brown layer..well, I can understand the disappointment. I myself have a...
Breeding Easter Egger to Easter Egger is something I want to avoid. People go crazy with that and that is how you end up with "Easter Eggers" that lay cream, brown, etc.. I have Easter Egger hens every color under the sun. It seems unlikely that each of them were created by an Easter Egger...
I do have a blue Easter egger hen as I mentioned and I expected the blue chicks from her. I just didn't realize that every single other chick would be black. I hatched chicks from a white EE, a brabanter/spitz/easter egger hen, a welsummer. If I want some of the mother's colors to show through...
Can someone explain this? I have a Lavender Ameraucana roo that I got as a young chick and have been growing out specifically to use with my mixed flock of girls for creating Easter Egger chicks. I've done three small batches of chicks so far and ALL of the chicks have been either Blue or Black...
Most of the hens are Easter Eggers. Here he is with some of the girls in question. I expected black from some of them (Australorp) but not with the other colors.
I have a Lavender Ameraucana roo that I got as a young chick and have been growing out specifically to use with my mixed flock of girls for creating Easter Egger chicks. I've done three small batches of chicks so far and ALL of the chicks have been either Blue or Black. I thought that the...
A friend bought Ameraucana hatching eggs from Sunnyside up Micro Farm. Two of the chicks that hatched she gave to me. She thought they were 1 pullet and 1 roo since one is larger and has a pinker comb. Both birds still have completely flat combs though and while these are my first Am chicks...
That's really interesting! Apparently the red color is dominant. The crossed roo I have is also red but is young and doesn't have his adult feathers yet.
I was given SS hatching eggs. I ended up with three females and one roo. They are about 6 weeks old and the hen chicks all very similar while the roo is a bit lighter and has a red chest instead of a white chest. Is this normal for the breed or is he not pure SS?
