So, 15 week old Rosie turned out to be Cockerella. We had hopes that we'd be able to send our interloper up to the one farm we have in the area, but no joy.
Hoping there is someone local (can travel as far south as Nanaimo) who can take him either to keep, or for freezer camp. He's docile, but...
Well, darn, darn, darn.
First, friend is correct, and I am never gonna stop hearing about that, second, the little fluffy-butt was bought as a sex link pullet, so was sure we were golden.
I'd had a sex link before with a nice big comb and wattles years ago, so was happy to live in the world of...
Well, as part of our flock, I got 3 sex-links. They are now coming up on 15 weeks. This one decided to try crowing this morning, and those tail feathers have me concerned.
Here I was all thrilled thinking she was getting ready to lay, and now it's looking like she's a he, and possibly heading to...
There was a while where I could only tell them apart from my Welsummers by the leg colour.
Made the potential mistake of getting both Australorps AND black Jersey Giants. Can't tell them apart. Although, there are 2 of the 4 black ones that have a white under feather. One more pronounced than...
I am certain one of my two Ameraucanas are girls. This one, I'm just not sure. The photo isn't great, but hoping it's enough.
There's just something a little different looking about this one that's been making me question the sex. The comb is pinker than the other (although, the colour in this...
Update:
Picked up the (not so) wee babies yesterday morning and got them home before dark. They coped really well with the long trip and are settling into the chicken house with the electric chicken mama quite nicely. They're exploring, eating crumbles and drinking their electrolyte spiked...
Husband has already ordered the heat plate, but thank you for the alternative suggestion. I foresee meaties in our future, so additional brooder options are always good.
We're getting 2 week olds because of immovable travel plans (husband has to fly to France for work). We live 2 hrs from the...
*sigh* it would appear those handy-dandy waterbottle nipple waterer things are not available in Canada (either that, or my google-foo is failing me), and Chicken Fountain won't ship them here. And anything I can get sent here costs a fortune in shipping. I can get the screw-in type of nipple...
...loves green.blue eggs). They will be 2 weeks old by the time I bring them home (because of travel plans and hatch dates).
We don't necessarily *plan* to keep all 11. We wanted to see which ones (other than the commercial layers) we preferred, then offer the others to our farm friends up the...
So, my husband lost a bet and has to get me a brooder heater (I decided on a large Premier One), and now we're getting 11 chicks in mid-April instead of POL.
The trip between hatchery and home is going to be about 9 hours (the last 64kms on poorly maintained gravel logging road). Leaving the...
So, we're in the process of planning for the next flock and intend to recreate the original coop we built in Vancouver way back when with some modifications for location and climate.
For the most part, it will be fine, however we do have one significant concern. We get massive amounts of rain...
Thanks, everyone. Also, I wanted to say that the dog in the photo is STILL around - just a little greyer in the muzzle. She's nearly 13 now and in amazing shape - still doing long hikes with her daddy and her much younger brother, and acts like a dog half her age. She's been all over Europe and...
Hi Again!
It has been a lot of years since I've been active, and a lot has happened in the meantime.
Coles notes, after 4.5 years in Europe, we returned to Canada and have been settled on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island for the past 2.
We are now, finally getting close to chicken...
Well, it's been a while. I wasn't even sure I could remember my login. I guess some of you might remember me, given the handle.
We are currently chickenless. In fact, we are currently without a yard, back or otherwise. Life has changed for us in a huge way -short version follows
Feller got...
Okay, I have FINALLY taken my head out of the sand and have accepted that Chicken Little is a boy (the clincher was his pathetic attempt at crowing this morning) and found him a new home by this afternoon.
It was hard to give in cuz he was just SO darn purdy.
Okay, Chicken Little is 7.5 weeks old and this pic was just taken. I am going away on the 13th for a couple of weeks and so if it is likely that CL really is a boy, then he will go on Craigslist this week. I have a couple more photos I can upload if this isn't sufficient.
Is there any chance that Chicken Little (at 6 1/2 weeks) is sitting in the nest box because (s)he's a girl and practising for when she is a big girl and lays eggs of her own, or does it just mean that (s)he likes sitting in the nest box?
Can you tell I'm desperate and will clutch at even the...
