I think we are going to hit the leak with waterproof RV seal tape; then we will either attach a 2ft length of tarp from right under the roof to the back side of the fence, or do gutters.
I think the tarp is probably what we will do for now because it won’t require removing any hardware cloth...
This is hysterical and gave us a much needed laugh.
We got an unexpected break from the rain today and so we are hoping a combo of waterproof rv seal tape and literally attaching a tarp to the back fence will fix this.
Did I mention we are flying out to Denmark next weekend and my mom is in...
Fellow rainy people, is any amount of rain in the coop acceptable?
We have been battling drips. We didn’t extend the roof enough because as you can see; we have neighbors. They’ve been cool about the poultry but I imagine they wouldn’t be happy with extending the roof into their egress.
We...
My wife climbed up onto the roof to extend the roof panel…but didn’t overlap the panel next to it, so now we have one dedicated drip spot.
I guess it’s better than the whole wall being wet. I am so over this 😂🥲
That’s what I was thinking, but I didn’t know if they maybe sold something that could do the same thing. No worries, it’s not like we aren’t sawing things and drilling things still at this stage! I’ll probably add a port for it on the wall above the nest box as I put the insulation in but didn’t...
Do you think 1/4in is enough to keep out rats and maybe one very fat and lazy raccoon? Mind you, I’ve never seen the raccoon in our yard, but it’s not like I’m watching all night.
Speaking of, if anyone has clever ways to make a hole somewhere to put an extension cord in that won’t act as a...
Oh, don’t get me wrong, last time we had chickens in Louisiana my red star sexlink girls would fight over mice and lizards.
But these silked Easter eggers.. I dunno, I’m just worried they’re fragile somehow! They are certainly quite dainty. I have kept pure silkies before and a stiff wind could...
Thank you! I am a little worried because we opted for 1/4in 23g hardware cloth on the sides - the logic being that I want to also discourage mice, and our yard is fenced, so we mostly end up with mice and rats. We switched to 1/2in for the floor because we couldn’t find 1/4in that was 3ft wide...
I cannot believe how long this project has dragged on, but the chicks are six weeks old now and the coop is almost finished. Putting in the last wall, coop floor, auto door/coop access door, and run door tomorrow.
Then all that’s left is HWC for the bottom. We have rats so we decided to deep...
I like this idea, but am not sure how to make it work as I intend to put hardware cloth on the floor, and build the litter up deep over it.
The chickens are not even out there and I can see rat tunnels in the corners. 🤢 we had a similar problem when we had quail. We live in the city in a fairly...
Hysterical. Well, hysterical in that I want to have hysterics!
The gap between the back wall of the coop and our fence is too small to attach a tarp over. It kept getting stuck. I even tried to do it from the neighbor’s yard (with their blessing) and no dice.
We are going to climb up top and...
Yes, we are working on that right now. The coop is insulated and the run has a roof, right now we are trying to figure out how to deal with rain that drips or is at an angle as the run isn’t perfectly level in spite of our best efforts; we live on a hill.
Update; it started raining harder so we went to check it out, and unfortunately it looks like we are having an issue with dripping on all sides. Hmmm. I know longer roof overhangs would have helped. I think for the back and sides we will add a gutter. For the front I intend to put up a curtain...
I don’t! It’s too dark outside. But I can take some tomorrow. That’s what I am worried about too. However, last time I had chickens the roof was literally just a tarp zip tied to the fence supports - but the fence was metal chain link, so I didn’t need to worry about rot.
If it helps, all of...
Hey all!
Our four silked EEs from MPC are six weeks old now, and are small, but seem fairly feathered out! I still see pinfeathers on them when I examine them of course, but they’re getting there!
I was really hoping to get them outside this coming week, but we are in Seattle, and I’m...
We finally finished the roof today right before a rain, and we realized as we were installing hardware cloth on the inside that our back wall of the run is juuuuust crooked enough that water drips from a roof panel my wife cut a little too short and ends up running down the cloth and onto the...
The EE/silkie chicks are a little over a month old now, and have graduated to the biggest size pen I’ve got before I kick them out.
Which means I really need to make the final design decisions and finish the stinking coop. The walls are up and hardware cloth is on; we stalled out on the roof...
We have a fenced yard, so dogs aren’t an issue. We are using an auto door for the coop, so I can use 1/2in HWC on the coop portion to keep out raccoons. My wife works during the day in an office right next to the coop so I am more worried about nighttime incursions than daylight.
Yeah, I can remove that board if need be.
It’s kind of too late to switch hardware cloth; I’ve used 1/4in all over the rest of the coop and run. I was under the impression the smaller mesh was better, especially as we live in a major city and I am primarily worried about mice and rats!
Sorry all! I typed this in a hurry. We are using this plan:
https://www.thegardencoop.com/product/garden-coop-walk-in-chicken-coop-plans/
Instead of having the roof supports be on cross braces, they’ll be directly attached to the roof of the run.
The entire roof and all exposed walls of the...
