My old English game bantam hens have hatched large fowl eggs more times than I can count-not just once or twice. I have always given them 6 eggs a piece from my standard size hens. Large sized eggs.
A small standard size hen or “light weight” can usually handle up to 10-12 large eggs.
A large hen like a buff orp with plenty of fluff can hatch up to 2 dozen. I have seen it happen with my own eyes.
A bantam hen can hatch up to 6 large eggs or up to 15 of her own sized eggs. My old English...
Thanks for the photo! I have had a large fowl rooster breed bantam hens with no issues.
My bantam roosters cannot reach and have never been able to make contact when attempting to breed even my medium size standard hens. Their backs just aren’t long enough to reach.
I would love to see what people have produced when crossing bantams and standard sized chickens together. There is so little out there about mixing them-photos at least. Can I please see your adult bantam x standards?
The 3 bantam standard crosses I’ve had before- same breed mothers… old English game bantam and same father, standard gamefowl cross rooster- 2 were bantam sized and one was standard sized. I’ve heard the bantam gene is sex linked. Not sure if that’s true though
Does anyone have photos of their grown standard x bantams they wouldn’t mind sharing??? There is so little photo evidence out there.
I am wanting to cross a leghorn rooster with my game bantam hens for a little bit larger sized bantam.
But I would love to know what the offspring might look...
Rooster in the back looks barred. Definitely some leghorn hens- I see white earlobes. Bird in the very front looks brown or red. Common breeds in the south back then were barred rocks, RIR’s, leghorns, and game chickens.
Definitely is referring to Dominique. I’m assuming dominecker was their local name for barred birds bred from Dominiques. Southern slang. Like “leggerns” instead of saying leg-horns. And yep, all my family is born and bred in Alabama lol. For better or for worse!
That long neck makes me think some kind of aseel, Thai, or shamo cross hen. Gamefowl cross. Interestingly though I’ve seen some guinea/chicken hybrids that have this same build. And some peafowl chicken hybrids lol
I love photos like this. I’ve got some taken at my great grandparents house of some barred rocks or “domineckers” as they called them. And boy the breed type was so different back then! You could tell these were “working girls” that foraged for their own food. They weren’t skinny, but def didn’t...
Can anyone share photos of their adult red leghorns from mcmurray? I want to order some just bc I’ve never had them. But the photo they’re using to advertise the breed is not ideal lol. Surely someone has bought some of these birds?
Guess I’m beating a dead horse with posting on this thread… but I’m also curious if anyone has any photos of Hamburg mixes to share. I love these little birds and I think their size is ideal for my situation and predator load.
If you have Livestock Guardian dogs that are trained not to kill your chickens and guard the same are they roost in you may be able to let them roost in trees no problem. I had a fair amount of bantam OEG games that ran free with a large RIR/gamefowl rooster. Almost all of them got killed by...
I miss your YouTube channel so much. It was the best on free ranging gamefowl for a sustainable homestead situation.
Plus I really loved your zebu and Bahia videos.
Hope all is well, bullfrog
Luckily I’m in Alabama! So glad I found this. I’ve never been one to just have one breed, but silver penciled rocks have really caught my eye. Giving these guys a try as soon as I move properties and can set up breeding pens. Thanks for posting this!
