Hybrid Crosses that use a Welsummer Rooster?

This is the opposite cross. CLB roo over Wely hens. They are very uniform. I believe (correct me if someone knows) the crele gene comes from the male. So I imagine they will look similar minus the barring. I have some hatching in 3 weeks so can update when I know!

A frame vs hoop for breeding pens

Having worked at a store that sells them and transported many and built several hoop coops, it isn't tricky if you have a pick up or at least a 5 ft trailer. They are very flexible and can be bent to fit without causing a permanent warp in the metal. I haul mine on a 5x10 trailer behind a jeep...

    Spring Chicks vs. Fall Chicks?

I got my first flock in September a few years ago and they started laying late winter/early spring and then layed almost without a break through their first full winter. I moved to a new property with more space and decided to add to my flock in the spring and not a single one of my spring...

    Depressed Chicken, How to Manage?

I'm curious how this turned out. I have a 2 year old Wyandotte who mysteriously went blind a year ago. When it first happened she had trouble finding the food and water and became ill so I put her in isolation in a brooder box in my livingroom until she seemed stronger, buy then she seemed...

    Chick name ideas!

I just call my New Hampshire Red quartet "The Reds" because I can't tell them apart. Maybe I should give them Russian names 😆

    Chick name ideas!

    Chick name ideas!

Mine mostly have old fashioned names. I have Beatrice, Louise (Thelma turned out to be a roo) Ludmilla, Willameena (One-Eyed Willy) and ducks named Olivia, Henrietta and Victoria. But then I also have chickens named Blackbeard, Potpie and She-Rah 😆

    Mating loss

Unfortunately hatched 9 and 5 were drakes! And now one less hen 😪 my first time raising ducks so I wasn't sure when to expect this kind of behavior to start. The drakes may have to go live with my goose until they are rehomed, she will certainly keep them in check.

    Mating loss

So I came out this morning and found one of my young hens drowned in the pool. No marks on her other than missing some feathers off the back of wings, and I strongly suspect since everyone else is fine and I see no sign of a critter getting in that one if my drakes might have drowned her trying...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My welly roo was already starting to show his comb by this age, but he and my one hen also grew faster than my other chicks because they were housed with Turkeys and eating higher protein. This is him now at 18 wks with his hens and turkey friends.

Comment by 'HomesteadDeb' in article '"Hentirement"'

My first Chickens just turned 3, and for the most part are still churning out eggs at a regular rate. Last year I added three Wyandottes who are now 2, and this year I bought two new Americaunas to add to my personal flock. I've lost a few over the years to diseases or injury. I should note that...

Should I warn neighbor that dog might get shot?

Animal control will kill it if it has killed other animals soooo... I've thought of getting a paintball gun, that way if I have to call animal controll about a loose dog I can mark it so they know it is the right dog. I live in BFE and loose dogs have been an increasing problem in my...

    Hatching assistance

I did that for him and he popped right out, he was ready to go! I think he has a dislocated toe though, from kicking. Then I ran to the laundromat and came back and another who hadn't even visibly pipped managed to hatch by itself in 2 hours!

    Hatching assistance

I have one that looks like it's totally unzipped but still has small bits of the membrane holding the shell together. No progress in 12 hrs and the feathers that are sticking out are starting to dry. I upped the humidity by tossing in a wet sponge but I'm trying not to mess with it too much...

Ended Broodies & Babies Video Contest

I told my friend we should start a broody business and rent them out as incubators 😆 she had three sitting nests but no roosters, so I gave her some of my fertile turkey eggs to tuck under them.

    coop ventilation

I'm in the same boat. I inherited this old dog shelter and am repurposing it into a grow out coop for my current turkey and chicken poults, and hoping to make it the duck house in the future. It certainly needs a little adaptation to do the job. I already installed the door, but it needs...
