I was having trouble going to sleep. I finished the first draft of my novel and started to edit, but had to turn in at around 10 p.m. I got up at 1:25 a.m. for a bathroom trip, then all my roosters began crowing at 2:30 a.m. for some unknown reason. So, in the end, I gave up and pulled my laptop...
I have my first broody in quite awhile-Dove. Why now? That little goof is stealing whatever egg is put in the top milk crate nest box (two stacked on top of each other). I think only Phoebe and maybe Cricket in that entire group is laying. I've had no blue or green eggs in ages. Four EEs hens...
Well, it was a short and they always end too abruptly. I loved that! I like his Mary, she's a chunky gal! Remember Hector's original hens were Mary, Thea and Jill. Mary died for an unknown reason at about a year old, bloated up and we couldn't save her. Thea died at about 4 yrs old having raised...
Thank you, @NanaK. It only takes one ornery rooster to ruin a day or even the hobby for life. I've had only two total so I've been fortunate otherwise. Not bad for 20+ years with all the different types and lines and chicks that have come through this place. Nathaniel has done nothing else...
You know, telling a story from a chicken's point of view would be interesting. I've read good books which were all or in part from an animal's point of view: the Fox and the Hound (fox, of course) and Sounding (Sperm whale), both serious books. I think I read Sounding several times, still have...
Oh, yeah. As of tonight I'm almost at 52K. By the end I am guessing it will be just over 55000 for me, then the edit will remove some, maybe even add some. I've done a lot of editing as I go. My son's is going to around 100K, or so he thinks.
Nothing much you can do. Excess calcium usually makes these protrusions/deposits on the outside of the shell, but that one is extreme. Not much you can do that I know of. Calcium and Vit D work together and maybe there's some sort of imbalance between the two, but I don't know. It's good that...
I agree about the pictures. I was personally put off by their stock photos, just went through the site yesterday (Oct 23). They show very substandard birds, IMO. Their Delaware and Barred Rocks, both breeds I kept for many years through breeder hatching eggs, are awful-looking in the pictures...
I stopped writing on my novel for the night at 49,781 words. There is four months of story left to get through and my original minimum goal was 50K. I'll be at least several thousand over that. No, it is not a story told from a chicken's point of view, sorry to disappoint you! :p
My son is a 3x...
Right again, Lisa. I'm not sure what I want at this point. I need laying hens because we eat a lot of eggs every day. If I explore bantam breeds, they will be clean-legged. I like the bantam Cochins a lot but the feathers hide too much and spurs get much too long before I notice them. I'd rather...
Rusty, I appreciate all you've said and I cannot disagree with any of it. I have always been such a stickler for proper rooster behavior, which is why all the others from this hatch are now gone, not just for aggression but also for nutty, unexplainable behavior.
I have no doubt that you are...
You are right about me having to get rid of all my chickens if I get seriously hurt. My husband can't do it and if I was incapable of taking care of them, or worse, died, you can bet he'd give them away (except for his favorites who are all old and on their way out anyway). I've fallen far too...
You have a valid point about hormone levels. I have given him more chances than I did his brother, Duncan, you're right about that. The only reason he is still here is just what you said about going down to the last one and what happens if something happens with or to Angus. I hate being...
Just when I said Nathaniel was being good, he wasn't. They were out and I needed them inside again. Walking toward the pen, I picked up a 5 gal bucket we use to collect shavings from the barn to bring it back to the barn.
Just as I went into the gate, as they all came up to greet me, Nathaniel...
It's been a non-eventful few days here, other than I just noticed another iris bloom about to open. I am in awe that I still have blooming irises almost in November! What a blessing they've been this year. Gotta find more of those re-bloomers to plant. How can we be almost in 2026?? I still...
We are influenced by our attempts at colorful chickens, I'd say! That is how the Delaware was created, as a sport of a different color. They took it and ran with it.
I didn't either, until I tried to find the bird I had just seen. The leucistics vary a lot. Some are almost pure white, some buff and white/cream, some have some black in them.
