There are BYC articles & threads on roo behavior & training that I hear are very informative. We can't have roo's so I never perused them myself. There are things to do & not do in raising a roo.
IMO Silkies ARE Sweetie Pies 🩷 & amazingly smart little "zoomies" as you labeled them. We've been so amazed at their smarts, quickness, awareness, hardiness, human friendly temperaments, & busy-ness in the yard as well as providing the largest of bantam eggs thru all 4 seasons of the yr. They've...
I think not cleaning my phone in 3 yrs is why my immunity got built up :lau ! Really, if we think about it... just stepping into an elevator, sitting in a waiting room, grocery shopping, or turning a door knob handle, we've already exposed or handled a myriad of germs/viruses/bacteria we haven't...
Oh, I wasn't advising YOU should get more birds. I only meant I liked your statement not to get just ONE bird. Your post reminded me of my & DH's past experiences & I was just reminiscing.
No bird can replace special losses. I still mourn being torn away from my farm life at 13-yrs-old & never...
Likely to keep the poultry/food industry from over-abusing its use in the egg/meat businesses.
One thing for sure... my vet saved our Mini many times w/Baytril injections ~ w/all her health issues she still lived almost to 7 yrs... otherwise we would've lost her the 1st yr of her life.
It never occurred to us that veterinarians were mostly cat/dog only Dr's! Unless one lives in a rural area, barnyard animals are not seen by vets here in the suburbs. There are avian specialists here but their prices are way higher than cat/dog vets.
We lucked out that our vet grew up w/...
W/ the Congressional shutdown many dock workers are not unloading container goods. My DD says its hurting her business getting imported goods right now. We can't get the popup canopy brand we like for the chicken yard either 🙁
It's best/smart IMO to get more than one bird from a hatch... too stressful introducing just one bird into an established flock anyway. We learned that the hard way 🙁
It was more birds than we needed but the last couple times we got 3 chicks from the same hatch so that if one died (chicks are...
I'm glad you researched C-Cross to be aware of all the possible health issues the hybrid can develop. The poultry/food industry dresses them from 6 to 8 weeks for market before they develop health issues ~ so sad. They are prone to overeat, even as chicks, so that may be the contributing factor...
It's so cute to watch them too! Our Silkies sometimes disappear in their dustbath holes & all we see is no bird ~ just dirt flying out of a hole!
Lately they graduated from the sandbox to using our raised garden bed which we let them use to direct deposit their fertilizer 😁:
We called a few vets around our area in advance of getting chickens so we'd have emergency contacts if a bird fell ill suddenly. We lucked out finding a vet nearby who is a dog/cat/exotics/bird vet. He's reasonable compared to an avian-only vet but it's still costly to use a vet.
DH took our...
