I think what surprised me most is how affectionate they can be, and how each one has a definite personality. I've had chickens who sit on me, sit next to me, avoid me, groom me, greet me. . . They're amazing, and I'm perpetually in awe.
Just be sure the tops of the run have some ventilation, as well as the coop. I have a small prefab for chicks, and I found some round vents with louvers on them. That keeps the wind from blowing on the chickens, since I can direct it. Keeps the rain out, too!

It's getting better. I teach high school in the Bronx, and the boys here like to cook. They see it as something they'll need in life.
The bigger problem is "safety." The kids can't even do labs in science because of using chemicals or fire or glass. No way we could have ovens or knives.
I agree with Dobie. I used to use a heater plate, but inevitably found the girls (including one Orpington) on the far side of the roost. And often one of the Easter Eggers snuggling under the Orpington! As long as the coop is draft-free, and the girls have a sheltered (wind-free) place in the...
