I have a gorgeous red/dark red/black tail feathers boy, William, if anyone wants him. We are near Salisbury, Maryland. I think he is a Welsumer but I need to take some pictures. He was from the June 1, 2016 hatch so at this point he is 7-1/2 months old. He has only "fluffed up" at me once...
I gave mine some leftover dry cat food that I was going to throw away. It was the cheap stuff that's mostly grain, which is not designed for a carnivore's diet (regardless of the picture of the smiling cat on the bag!).
Since it was mostly grain and high protein, I figured they could eat it...
Hhmm, that does make sense. Odd though, that the one laying the "Easter eggs" decided to quit laying that night. The one I had originally believed to be laying them, has the classic fluffy head and "furry ears" as well as kind of a furry beard.
I had 4 Buff Orpington roos to begin with. All...
Has anyone ever heard of a Black Australiorp laying greenish-blue eggs?
We lost one to a fox several days ago...and have not gotten another greenish-blue egg since! I assumed she was laying medium-brown eggs like the other three Black Australorps.
We had 14 hens and six roosters until earlier...
Another great source is local lawn/landscaping/riding mower equipment stores.
Our local Husqvarna dealer always has scrap wooden shipping pallets and crates stacked up around back.
After losing another bantam roo, this time to what was probably a raccoon, to keep them safe I've been putting the three remaining bantam cockerels in the coop with the hens again, much to the hens' disgust.
I brought some stale bread to feed for a treat, and gave my humpy little buddy a piece...
I hope he does calm down once he's out of the "adolescent" stage. It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, he's sweet and cooing to me in his funny, low "talk" most of the time.
He was constantly on the hens, and getting sandwiched by one or more of the big Buff Orpingtons. He'd grab a Golden Comet...
I hope not. He has been very affectionate, especially with me, since he was a tiny chick. He thinks I am his own "pet human".
He only started this less than a week ago, when I separated the cockerels from the hens, to keep them from badgering the hens to death.
If it has tires or testosterone, eventually it's going to be trouble!
Meanwhile...what can I do to convince him not to get too excited to see me?
He doesn't do it every time, though he follows me everywhere he can. I can pick him up and he just snuggles right into my arms, or rides on my...
I have three Cochin bantam roosters, a Polish Crested bantam rooster, and three Buff Orpington roosters that I recently separated from the main flock due to their unrelenting gang mating of the somewhat unwilling hens. They are all about 4-5 months old, give or take.
I have been rotating them...
Update...
RIP Bilbo.
Had to separate them from the hens, as they were constantly mass piling on the poor girls. A fox got Bilbo, all I found was a trail of pure white feathers.
The others are up for grabs.
The Black Australorps I have are noticeably more docile and sweet natured than any of the other breeds I have. They calm down and settle into my arms quickly when I pick them up, and are so trusting. I kept the one that turned out to be a rooster, he eats out of my hand and doesn't constantly...
Out of six bantams from Tractor Supply, turns out 5 of the 6 are cockerels. I was hoping for a more even split between males and females, but it was not to be.
I am going to have to part with a few of my pet Cochin cockerels, as the hens are not too happy about having so many enthusiastic...
Yep, five of the six bantams are cockerels. The black and white one was busily attending to Dolley this morning, until Gandalf knocked him off and finished business, much to her disgust.
So one of the standard size pullets is a Golden Laced Wyandotte? There are two other with brown/game bird...
So far it looks like 4, maybe 5 of 6 bantams are cockerels. Only one, a little black one with white lacing (Penciling?) is definitely a pullet...she looks like one, with a very small comb, and she's been the "sexy girl of the day"...poor thing. The Polish Crested bantam we named Gandalf, and...
