Just recently discovered this thread. I'm slowly making my way through all the previous posts (I'm up to page 160! Hurrah!) Nice to have a place to hang out.
Go through all the fasteners and toss or pass along the ones that I'm unlikely to ever use; organize said fasteners in my new workbench; and build roll-around carts/tables to get the bench bandsaw and drill press off my miter saw bench.
First two accomplished, third started.
I feel so organized.
This is a long shot, but 6-month-old Falco needs a new home. He and Pippin have started fighting a bit and I'd like to move him along before it gets out of hand. So far Pip has put him in his place without too much bother, but I don't want it to get to the point of a knock-down drag-out. I don't...
First Queen's Egg! Right on schedule. I'd guesstimated sometime between the last of October and last of November, so she's sort of smack in the middle. I suspect this is from Elizabeth as I'd noticed her going in and out of the coop the last few days which just struck me as a bit unusual.
You...
Been there done that. I've got little x's on the fakes so I can tell the difference, but in the twilight, they tend to disappear. I really need to put marks on them that are a bit more obvious.
Aaaand - last night everyone put themselves up. We went and checked on them after about an hour, everyone except for Falco and one of the Queens was roosting on the lip of the poop tray. I'd sort of expected this, as when I was building it, it just looked like an attractive place for a chicken...
Well, last night everyone went up (hurray!) - except Helena (boo!) Who was in her "usual" spot on the peak of the green coop. So, I had to go pop her through the door before it closed at 5:30. She complained vociferously at being held, but once inside did figure out (despite the fact it's almost...
As expected, last night was a rodeo, although not as bad as it could have been. No one went in the big coop on their own, even though I'd closed up the other coops. As it got darker they got more confused.
I had Mr. RoseHawke on the inside of the new coop to block off the pop door between...
IT'S FINISHED! Well, maybe not finished, but at least to the point of being functional.
Tonight will be the first night we'll put them in the Big Gray Coop. I expect a free-for-all. I'm thinking I'll probably shut the door of the little coop ahead of time and then gather up chickens. There's...
It will be fine. Even the very occasional single digits we get will be fine. The thing is, it seldom stays below freezing here - 20's at night sometimes, with highs in the 40's or 50's the next day is about as bad as it gets.
True. It's getting to where I don't trust anything that's not, as you suggested, from a .edu or .org, or better, a scientific abstract. Although even those you really need to chase down and make sure it's from the actual researcher and not from a study of studies as it were.
After a bit of searching, the best I can tell is that "Light Brahmas" are supposed to have a Colombian feather pattern. It seems that the all-white Brahma color pattern is not recognized by the APA. However, that said, it also seems that shows may have an "any other color" category where I guess...
Moving right along . . .
Spent the last few days painting and trimming out. A smidge of trim on the front and the trim on the back/west side is yet to do; we need to get a couple more sheets of LP siding that I can rip into strips to finish that up. I've used up all the scraps and leftovers...
In my post in the thread How did your flock annoy you today? I relate how Pippin and Helena annoyed me by deciding to abandon their little coop come roosting time and roost with the big girls and on top of the bigger coop, respectively.
Well, this has now become a "thing". Every night I'm...
Well, to make a short story long - a couple of nights ago, I went to lock up. Cochin bantams Pippin and Helena sleep in the "little coop" (one of those tiny Chinese things,) inside the run as the "big coop" is not big enough for 4 fully grown Legbars, a couple of half-grown Cinnamon Queens, and...
