URGENT! Hen has extremely bloody, bare picked vent, what do I do?

It doesn't appear that it's raw flesh. Are there areas where it's raw? The blood may have come from having feathers pulled so now it's not raw anymore, just bare skin. You could still put some triple antibiotic like Neosporin (without painkiller) on it as it might soothe it for her. It looks...

What's the temperature where you are???

Ours don't. They have feathers on their feet that sort of protect them, yet, snow can get clogged up in them too, yet, doesn't seem to affect them. Our coops are heated to 40°F, so they'll take breaks and get a bite to eat/drink, and probably thaw out their feet, then back out they go.

Hello, i just joined the community

We've gotten a brand new shed, great duck house, and many other things that were nearby, but that's okay. Both of our coops are Amish built 12'x20' and they do great work!

mottle genetics - choc and black

I'm not sure if it's the same for all breeds, but in silkies, to express mottled, it takes two genes. You putting your mottleds together provided they look mottled will be all mottled chicks, and should pan out the way you mentioned. If you bred your chocolate mottled with a chocolate hen with...

Hello, i just joined the community

Hiya, Jay, and welcome to BYC! :frow Prefab coops normally hold less than half the chickens they say they will and after a couple of years are junked unless a person does a lot of reinforcements. Here's our Coop forum you could browse through. Many coops were built by amateurs. Facebook...

    Chick hatched, won’t open eyes?

Do you have some vitamins for their water, like Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench? It might be keeping its eyes shut as it's feeling weak and tired. Otherwise, I think I'd shut the lights off and see how it is in a few hours.

    Chick hatched, won’t open eyes?

Hi, I've hatched hundreds and never seen that happen. It could be having some light sensitivity issues. Try lights dimmed and see if that changes anything. It also could have something in its eyes. You could rinse them with saline solution.

Lethargic, puffed up hen with pasty butt

Hi! Gosh, so sorry about your hen. How old is she? Finding her in the yard like that just sounded like eggbound to me, yet by what you're saying, that's unlikely. If her abdomen is now swollen, that could be ascites (water belly). Is she breathing heavier than usual? Due to the crop not...

    Leaking yolk

This is great advice. Calcium is one of many vitamins/minerals that chickens don't excrete excess of, or excrete it very slowly, so any extra they consume and can't use sits in their organs. By putting it in their feed, there are some that need it, but you probably have some that don't, and...

    Molting Question

That's actually a great question I've never heard asked! To my knowledge, as well, it has nothing to do with the breed. But some hens seem to molt harder and longer than others. I have two silkie hens of around 30 that lost nearly every feather and took about a year to get back to normal. My...

    Vent and Crop help

It might be impacted. How does it feel? Like squishy or like there's a golf ball in there? Probiotics would help more if it was sour crop and the runny poop issue, but impacted crop has a bit different treatment. Here are two of the best articles about crops. It'll help you figure out more...

What's the temperature where you are???

We just planted goji berry plants last spring. They grew well and are mulched for winter. I'm hoping they come back. We'd never heard of them before, but got them from family in MN. They were growing them for something to do with cancer, not sure if it helps prevent it or helps if you have...
