My hen Iris has a horribly bloody vent/bum area and seems to be in pain. She’s not feisty and flighty like usual, and put up little resistance when I attempted to clean her wound. The blood was stuck on very well so I couldn’t clean it very well and it’s still pretty bloody. I probably won’t be able to get pics till tomorrow. What should I do? How do I treat her pain? Are there some pills or meds or something that she can have? Please help!

Sorry, no pictures right now. I’ll get some tomorrow, but for now, imagine this but with a layer of blood. It’s not really like anything I’ve seen online. But some good news I guess, when I was putting her in her isolation cage some of her spiciness returned. She did NOT want to get into the cage.

Treat it in prevention for fly strike as soon as possible, keeping her inside and away from flies would be the best move for her recovery. If it's very cold outside, the worry about flies is less, but the amount of bare skin could lead to frostbite. Also, try to figure out who the bum-picker is. You might have to cull the bum-picker if you cannot figure out a way to make them stop. Sometimes adding extra activity enrichment and protein can help, but sometimes some birds aren't meant for flocks.

I am going to keep her inside the coop in a dog crate. It’s not very cold where I live right now fortunately, 35-45 degrees. The flies aren’t out quite yet but I’ll treat her anyway. Unfortunately, I believe that it’s a group effort between my other 3 hens, so culling is not an option. I believe it’s an enrichment problem which I will work to fix.

It doesn't appear that it's raw flesh. Are there areas where it's raw? The blood may have come from having feathers pulled so now it's not raw anymore, just bare skin. You could still put some triple antibiotic like Neosporin (without painkiller) on it as it might soothe it for her. It looks very swollen too. Has she been laying eggs?

Feather picking can occur for several reasons but the two most common are overcrowding and lack of protein.

Chickens need minimally 4 sq feet each in their coop, and 10-15 sq feet each in their run.

As far as protein, if they're on a layer feed, that's probably around 16%. You might want to try an all-flock for a while, as that's usually around 20%. Treats like scrambled eggs, fish, cat food, etc. are high in protein that you could give them small amounts of.
