Today I found one of my hens (Carol) dead in the coop. This summer we have lost 5 hens including Carol. One of them my husband performed an autopsy on and she was egg bound. Our girls are three yrs. old. Of the 5 - 2 definitely passed away from being egg bound, 2 - I don't know why & one...

Upon further investigation I believe she is egg bound. I watched her walk, her tail feathers are down, her vent is pulsating. I gave her calcium & an epsom salt bath. I also have crated her in a quiet spot. Hopefully she will be able to pass it. She has always laid extremely large eggs.

I'm not sure if this is an injury? I didn't witness her getting pecked by any of the others. My girls are almost 3 yrs. old & I've never seen anything like this. Any advice would be appreciated. She doesn't seem herself & I don't know what to do. Thank you.

Update - she is puckering @ her vent. Her abdomen is hard. She is currently in another epsom salt bath. She had a dirty bottom, so she has expelled something. But she is much weaker and getting worse. I really don't know what to do. I don't want her to suffer, but don't know if I should put...

Also, she has been given epsom salt bath, pedialyte with water & calcium. She has ate some boiled egg - yolk only & romaine lettuce.

please tell me is this possible if my chicken is egg bound? She is eating, drinking... but she isn't well. I checked where I believe the eggs come out, but, I don't know if I feel anything. What I've read is that an egg bound chicken can't poop. Is this true? And she is just sick?

She isn't housed with the RIR. They were out in the yard when it happened. She is housed with Australorps. Thanks!

Yesterday one of my RIR went after one of my brown leghorn. See the photo of her injury. I was able to clean it up. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I need to do? I'm also attaching a picture of how it looks today. Thanks!

This evening while we had our girls out, one of our RIR squatted & out came a shell-less egg. We have found the inside of eggs from time to time in the laying boxes, but never witnessed this before. She will be 2 in July. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Thank you!

Thank you. We do remove the egg daily. And when we take her out she will stay out for a few minutes.

Well, I just Googled brown leghorns... what a learning experience this is. We also Googled white Rhode island's. Regardless of what we actually have I'm glad that I posted & now know more about our chickens. Thanks everyone!

Thank you. We sure love them, whatever they are. We got the Reds, Whites & the other two from Rural King here in Central Florida. They labeled the multicolored hens as an Americana. One lays a white egg & the other lays a white egg with a pinkish tint. Here is a few more pics.
