I have 9 regular hens and a silkie rooster. The hens all roost on their bar but the silkie roosts on the floor. With these unusually cold temps at night, will he be warm enough? He has no one to snuggle with!
My love got the better of me and now I have an adorable 6 month old silkie cockerel who is being attacked by humongous hens. I have him separated now but will this ever work out?
Earlier this month I bought some pellets for the run because it was pure mud from all the rain we were getting. My rooster ate them right away (thinking it was huge feed?!) and he died a few days ago. He was about 2 and healthy afaik. My neighbor was watching them for us and she said he was...
One of my hens had 4 chicks last May and 2 are males. Our existing rooster has maintained his alpha status and the 2 younger roos stick together and so far just get run off of the food and water until the flock has finished. Today, though, 1 of the roos had a bloody neck and we assumed he got...
Is it really THAT harmful? I gave them grower fed up until this week when I ran out. Rather than buy some more, I'm wondering if I can just start them on layer feed. They are not laying yet.
I had DH screw 2 milk crates to the wall of our new coop (old shed we repurposed) and had him add an extra 4" of wood with a lip on it to keep the hay and eggs in. Anyone do something similar?
She got up today and I counted them. They stink and are filthy. They're set to hatch in a few weeks. I thought one broke because of the smell but I couldn't see any broken ones. Is this ok?
My hen hatched 4 eggs on Mother's Day and I caught these two fighting today. They're almost 6 weeks old. They are the only ones with red combs. Their dad is a leghorn. Thoughts?
DH came home with this (for free, thank goodness!) but it's in bad shape. The walls are ok but we'll have to build a new floor and Ineed to add roosting bars and nesting boxes. It is conveniently right next to the fire pit 😆
We have a broody hen who I have no problem letting hatch some chicks but she's doing it wrong lol. She just sits on her own egg that she lays or nothing at all. I've been picking her up and she just clucks and stays poofed out all day. should I wait out the broodiness or try to break her?
Welp, it finally happened. Our lovely, docile rooster turned in us. It started with attacking my 4 year old because he didn't like her picking up the hens. She's been doing this for months! Then he turned on my husband and finally me (and I'm the only one who picks him up). So far it's just...
I have a BO who is not low on the pecking order but is being bullied by an older hen who has been with us longer (but who has always been quiet and independent). BO is sitting atop 13 eggs (was 11 but now 13 so that's another issue because they won't all hatch at the same time). Anyway, I...
I give my hens organic layer feed and they free range sporadically in winter (in the summer when they're out everyday) and they're eggs are pretty unremarkable. I like that I know they are treated well and what they're eating but the yolks are ho-hum. My mom says when she grew up, their eggs...
She was acting quiet this afternoon and standing alone then we noticed this hanging out of her. It looks like tubular skin. I may have seen yellow like yolk so I'm worried an egg broke inside her.
Mine's in the garage in a plastic bin but the mice can get to it in the winter, and squirrels/chipmunks in the summer. Thinking of getting metal trash bins but leaving outside by the coop. Bad idea?
I forgot to open the door to my hens' coop today and didn't realise until just now when I put my other hens in :(. They had no food and water all day. Will they be ok?
