I checked the good mama about noon and all was well. 2pm a dead poult near the door. She was sitting in the back about the same spot. Not all are meant to live.
I have seen a fox a couple weeks ago and a pair of coyotes last week. So I am assuming the pair scared the hen, without her loosing feathers, over the 2 fences. She was either caught off property or got lost. The poult could be somewhere in the weeds dead. A 3 days old could easily be missed...

Known chance I take with semi free range. That's why I have too many, I thought it would make predator loss easier emotionally. Still stressful.
So far still no sign of them.
The good mama has at least 14 poults. 11 from the missing one. There's 3 eggs she moved off of and I gave them to another who had one. The hen that had one was laying across the road and came back with a shoulder missing feathers. I locked her in a few days and she...

Today a nest that had been rained on had 12 of 15 hatch. She was on a walk about leaving them alone, so I grab 11 and gave to the "...
Yeah I just butchered a tom that was king last spring and was injured when he was deposed by a nephew. I should have butched him then...or mid summer when he twisted half a wing off a late poult. But I waited until last week. Only reason I did the deed was eggs hatching this week and I know he...
I buy a bag a year or walk across the road every other year and gleen my cousin's field after harvest.
I throw some in a pen to get them use to going in so they are easier to catch.
