My hubby is going to knock up a little brooder today so I would be able to get some eggs this week... I would just prefer some breeds that are friendly to kids and winter hardy. Not sure about those breeds you have, would they work?
We had a rooster that we had to rehome last year. Evasive he kept atacking our daughter. Such a bummer too because he was so nice and then changed instantly. So we aren't interested in a rooster at this time. What kind of eggs do you have? Where are you? I have heard of people letting their hen...
I have an EE hen that is a year old who keeps trying to hide a clutch of eggs and sit on them. We don't have a rooster, but we would like to let her try hatching some eggs... any tips? Our first girls are only a year old so we are new to this. Anybody local have some fertile eggs?
My sunbeam pad is able to washed so I haven't worried about the poo too much. I have a cloth diaper taped around the whole thing to protect front the wires. I figure I will just wash it all when I am done. The popes dry and get flicked off often. I have another cloth diaper on the top draped...
I'm hoping you mean first 2 weeks....(instead of years!!)
I'm hoping to get at least one broody, would love to be able to watch the truley natural process! Can't wait for those eggs!!
I'm in Williamstown, Vermont. This is our first time with chicks as well! We have nine, they are three weeks old right now. Started out in the coop from the day we brought them home using the mama heating pad method to have a more natural experience and to avoid the fire risk with a lamp. They...
So it's been below or close to freezing almost every night since we got the chicks almost two weeks ago. Our MHP is still set on six, they all use it every night and pop in and out during the day. Should I wait until they don't want to use it to turn it down? They are feathering out nicely...
My chicks are 1 week old and all doing well and thriving! They have been outside with the MHP from day one With temps 26F to 75F and they are doing great and feathering out fast! Love how low key this experience has been.
Thanks everyone! It was still wet not using a heat lamp, using the mama heating pad so no worries there. So I just scratched it up and put a small amount of new FF on top. I am spreading it out on a split log, and that seems to be working really well. They seem to be eating more today too.
So this may be a dumb question but... I have been feeding my new chicks FF and they are all eating well it seems. But I still haven't figured out exactly how much they need to eat so there is a lot left over, do I need to scrape it off my log feeder? And clean out the bowl? Or just put a little...
Mama heating pad is the way to go! No risk of fire and the cozy more natural feel it gives is what made me want to try it. And how happy the chicks are sealed the deal!
[/IMG]Picked up our peeps yesterday! Opened our box and another one had snuck in! So now we have nine. They are all doing well. Cozy under their mama heating pad in their coop, even though it got down to 27 degrees last night! I kept checking on them, they were all quiet, asleep under their...
Went down to 27 last night, 2 day old peeps under mama heating pad did great! Quiet all night and ready for breakfast this morning. Not a sign of pasty butt among them. Yay! Now it's 35 and they are in and out from under MHP just doing their chick things. Water, peck, peck, food, peck, run under...
