Oh, yeah, on March 8th, I purchased 3 "production reds" (which I assume are the redstars or red sex link chicks), and they're really different from the red pullets and BO's. If this is true, then they're definately not them.
Thanks for responding though. I know pics would help. will take...
I got my chicks from TSC, the first batch on March 1st. They said they were 6 Buff Orphington straight run, and 6 "red pullets". Now after a month, they look exactly the same. I'm no chicken eggspert but I know what looks alike. I was assuming "red pullet" means RIR. I've looked at RIR...
My math is substandard compared to some of these stories, yet, I'll do the math.
Never had chickens, never gave it much thought. Started watching what the bankers and the Federal reserve was doing. Studied Austrian Economics. Got more worried about the economy (my ability to continue a...
So far I haven't lost one yet. I did see a orange tabby roaming my 3 fenced acres. Hopefully the dog did her thing with it. a week ago I put the 6 RIR's out in the coop area. Today I put the 6 BO's out there too. The 3 Redstars are still in the brooder. I gave them a few hours out with the...
I have 3 day old Redstars, two week old Bo's, and nearly 3 week old RIR's and I can testify that they all love crumbled up microwave popcorn. It's exceedingly funny watching them grab a chunk and go running for the corner while being chased by the others. The sad part is, there's a pile of it...
intact skin is an excellent barrier to bacterial infection. You say there was little blood, so the wound couldn't have been deep. Some minor capillary bleeding is the most likely source. scabs are needed to restore the protection the skin has to bacteria. Use hydrogen peroxide to clean the...
Chickens don't chew their food in their teeth, and so, nature has given them a sack (crop) in their lower throat(alimentary tract) in which the food passes. The grit being heavy rest in that sack, they move the sack around and the stone grit helps break down the food they eat. I hear they...
Hmmm, I got 6 straight run BO's and 6 RIR pullets a couple weeks ago. The RIR were about a week older then the BO's at the time of purchase. Then last nite a co worker brought me 3 Red Star pullets. So, 12 came out to 15. Can chicken math ever be unlearned?
Since the nearly 3 week old...
I'm new at this too. I someone mention crushing up cooked noodles, and I remember seeing some old elbow mac in a jar. I cooked it sort of soft. They love it. It was cheap. Now everytime I put my hand down in the brooder, most come running to get the treat (after my hand is down in deep and...
I would answer the question, but don't have the answer. I wondered the same, yet it seems the "standard" used and if it were a problem, I'd have to assume someone would have said something, somewhere. I just haven't seen it.
eek, get heat lamp
day olds need temps around 95 deg. Lower the temp 5 deg a week until room temp. Atleast, that's what this newb has learned.
TSC has the 250W red heat lamp and a clamp on fixture to hold it. If it's to late to get one, try anything to raise the temps around them. Water...
As I understand it, chicks need food with a higher level of protein than do roosters or hens. I see roughly 5 kinds of food available.
Starter with 24% protein
Starter/grower with 20% protein
Grower/finsher with 15% protein
then for laying hens, Layer with 16% protein which has added calcium...
TSC does not vaccinate against Marek's but does have the stuff you can use to do that. I was told that unless your flock is located near other flocks, then it might not be necessary as it's spread by dander and feathers. I didn't do mine.
From the TSC in Orangeburg SC, I picked up my first chicks; 6 straight run Buff Orphingtons and 6 Rhode Island Red pullets. This is that start of the second week. The RIR's were about a week old when I got them, so they're a little bigger than the BO's. Now the race is on to build a coop. So...
My bag of Mannapro chicken grit says "Feeding Directions - Provide Manna Pro Chick Grit to young birds beginning at two weeks of age...." so I suppose that means "not before two weeks old". Hope this helps
As I've read about cedar shavings and the toxicity of cedar, it's not the wood itself or the shavings, but the dust that is inhaled which can be toxic. If that's true, then unless there's dust being inhaled, it shouldn't be an issue. Cedar is used in the construction of some coops. It's...
Now you have me worried. My coworker says they won't fly over my fence. I own 3 acres and planned to just put the coop near the "mother inlaws house" (separate shop on the property) and let them run the property (as I understand it, that's called free range). I've seen deer at my pear tree...
