Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Piglet needs a psychiatrist. Either that, or she is born management material. She continues to do everything like a broody. She shouts a lot. Tries to intimidate everyone, and is generally disagreeable. Everything that is, except sit in a nest - she has delegated that to Tassels. She even...

I don’t know what else to do!

I am so sorry. It sounds devastating. Hopefully someone more expert than me will respond. One thing you should probably do is get a necropsy on the one the next one that dies (sorry that sounds awful). State labs are usually able to do them for a reasonable cost and at least that will help...

Théo and the chickens des Sauches

On a brighter note, I promised to post pictures when my irises came out. Two shots from the patch where the first one emerged and then the mass out in the field. I do love them!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Piglet has given up being broody. She still likes flaring her hackles and making a lot of broody sounds, but she is finding that being broody is interfering with her eating schedule. Tassels has definitely not given up.

Good luck Alex. May I suggest your first home improvement project should be a really good fence.

Théo and the chickens des Sauches

Sorry all. I didn’t mean to be a downer. It is just my way of coping. I am probably still more active than the majority of the population, but the reality is that I will probably die long before the worst from a climate perspective, and I am very content in my introvert cocoon with my cats and...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Piglet (as you might expect from her name) is very good about getting up and eating regularly. I actually think her ambivalence about sitting is because it interferes with her meal times! It is Tassels who won’t get up unless I drag her off the nest. Another week and Tassels will go into broody...

Very wise. Otherwise they might start running and wake him up! Happens with my lot all the time. Looks like they are dreaming they are hunting big game on the Serengeti and then they kick themselves in the face and wake themselves up! :lau

Sadly the problems will have an impact everywhere. I confess I am quite pessimistic about it all. I am also much closer to the end of my life than the beginning and I find my attitude increasingly detached. Not my problem. I am not proud of that, and I strive to ensure that my personal impact...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Piglet is conflicted Last night she roosted right next to the nest boxes leaving Tassels to keep the nest warm. In the morning she was back to full on broody. This evening she had a new version of broody which involved a lot of running around all fluffed up and going in and out of the nest box...

What is the volume of antibiotic you need to give? And is it powder or liquid? I had quite good success with ‘bread balls’ - pop them in the beak (at the back and to the side) and one swallow and it is gone. You need bad quality bread though to be able to make it into balls!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Poultry DVM says that the dosage of fenbendazole is 20-50mg/kg given daily for 3-5 days and then repeated for another 3-5 days after a 10 day gap (that is to get the worms that were only eggs during the first dose). The scientific studies on fenbendazole dosing (which are few) are in the same...

Oh yes. I will live to fight another day. I have to keep reminding myself that she is but a teeny tiny chicken, and I am a large and mighty chicken-servant!
