Its been a year since I have had chickens and we are going through withdrawals LOL.
Are there any issues to raising chicks in the fall?
I am in northwest WI and we will not see temps to cold for a couple months.
I was thinking of brooding them in the coop with a brooding plate. Before we had...
Just got an order from Murray McMurray and I got a free black chick. In my order I have 2 Black Australorps and this one looks different. I have looked and the only think I can find that this chick matches is a Black Star female but those are not exotic.
Here are pics.
Yes the white ones are the meaties. All the birds will be 6 weeks on Wednesday.
Those Cornish X's really grow fast.
I know what you mean about digging in rocks, I have had to before. The worst part about my yard is all the clay. It becomes a pain to dig through that.
I put in the two windows toward the run and i made a cable system so they open and close from the outside of the building. The pop doors open by cable from the inside.
Here are some pics of the girls. These ones are form about a week ago.
Here are some pics from yesterday and today
Sorry its been a while, been busy with the coop and work. Thanks for the reminder.
To start off here are some pics of the coop from start to where i am now. I do still have to get more windows and figure out some more venting.
Started off as a garage. I split it and half is coop the other...
These only have 4 more weeks and i know thats all they do is eat, sleep, and poop but i was hoping the odor would be somewhat more managable. I just want to make sure i am doing the DLM correct. My layers go out to thwir part of the coop in 2 weeks.
I am at about 7 inches now. I have gable vents, soffit vents, 1 window thats open during the day and i leave the pop doors and the people doors open during the day.
They are not going outside yet. I try to get them to and they freak out. Not sure if its the ramps or what.
Chicks are growing well. Here are some more pics.
In 2 days they will be 4 weeks.
My little camera hog Hennrietta
Tamma Lamma is really dark compared to the other 2 RIR'S
Here is Guido

Poopy Butt
Meaties have been in the coop for almost a week. I must say there is definitely a smell there. I mix it up with a hard rake every other day. Do i need more leaves?
2 of my EE's are the same, the dark brown ones with the tufts under the eyes. The third is totally different. That is the one my daughter names Guido LOL.
Time to meet the chicks...
They are all named now. We have 2 Barred rocks named Hennrietta and Ethel, 3 RIR's named Poopy Butt, Tamma Lamma, and Curious, and 3 EE's named Inga, Matilda, and Guido.
This one here is my little camera hog Hennrietta.
Here is Curious
Here is Poopy Butt
And...
We moved the meaties out to the coop this evening. I have fresh wood chips about 5" deep and a layer of dried leaves on top. I need to get more chips for the run tomorrow. Does this seem like a good start to the DLM?
Thanks all I was second guessing myself. I remember when I was young and when we got chicks in the summer dad would just hrow them out in the coop and usually would only lose a couple in the first week.
I will be ordering more for this year and see how that batch goes. Maybe the first was just...
I have 3 places close by that I can get them through. But they could not tell me what breeds any of the chicks were. I wanted certain breeds of layers so I went with Meyer. They are great to deal with and I can get replacements for the ones I lost but I just got a little discouraged after losing...
