Thanks for the feedback everyone. We recently had to switch their food because we were on Texas Naturals and they ALL got diarrhea and egg production was way down which I didn’t think too much about bc it’s winter. Switched to purina and poop is back to normal and I’m getting 4 eggs a day...
She is lowest in the pecking order. Found this today. Did they really peck her this much or is it something else?? They never seem to be fighting or anything. What do I do? Poor thing :(
Wow! Nice!! Ours are definitely getting darker too! They’re actually starting to turn sort of light purple. One of our langshans can’t figure it out. Today I found her egg in the run! They seem to be livelier and on the mend from the pox so that’s good but now we’re dealing with poo puddles on...
Ok well no mites or lice in case anyone was wondering. I’m thinking it has to be the soil that was in a pot in their run. It looks like the black gold kind of soil and it was damp yesterday so if they were trying to dust bathe in there I can see how it would come off later once dry and fluffing...
Just a thought...I have a pot of black soil that had weeds in it that they ate up and now they just sit in the pot. Is it possible it could be dirt that came off their feathers?
I missed these updates!!! It’s been so busy here. I love her pink eggs!! Has your roost layer stopped? One of my langshans chooses the coop floor consistently. Dealing with nasty fowl pox and possible mites now too. There’s black dust under the roosts and I have no idea what else it could be...
I scoop the poop board daily and this wasn’t here yesterday. Tons of black powder on top of the sand. It’s usually white. We have sand and PDZ and it is not damp. Not sure what this is from but it happened overnight while they were roosting which makes me think mites???
Thank you!! Although their pox are looking gnarly I’m hoping they’ve turned a corner. Compared to some pictures online it seems mild but hopefully they get back to themselves soon.
I love hearing about your flock! Your pictures are really clear and beautiful and helpful! Feel free to always...
My girls are looking rough with their pox but today was the first day all of them laid! Our langshans are exactly 6 months! One of the langshans laid on the coop floor so hopefully she’ll figure out the nest box soon. All of my eggs look the same to me minus the one with freckles lol we have...
I’m still waiting for our blue langshans first eggs! They’re 26 weeks on Friday. Taking their sweet time. But...it looks like they developed fowl pox last week. It seems like a mild case but they all have spots now. I’m thinking this might delay things. Not sure...I’ve been getting speckled eggs...
What about spraying some type of predator scent along the fence line? Could you lay a hardware cloth apron along the fence like so the fox couldn’t dig in? The wire might be difficult to do here.
Do you think she’d fit symptoms for gapeworm? It effects the respiratory tract and they often stretch their necks up to breathe better. I’m not an expert but happened to be reading about it today and it came to mind when I saw your post. And the fact that she doesn’t have nasal discharge etc...
This video was shared with me in another thread and it was immensely helpful. Keep her away from food and water over night to check if the crop is flat as it should be first thing in the morning. If it is there shouldn’t be a problem. If it feels squishy/hard it could be impacted/sour. This...
I swear by using apple cider vinegar water for chicks and chickens. We’ve never had a pasty butt using acv. 1 TBSP per gallon. Make sure you clean their little bums with a qtip so it doesn’t become a problem. One of my chicks I had to dip her beak for several hours before she realized what she...
One thing you could try is crouching down and feeding the other breeds from your hand. When they trust you you can start picking them up from the crouched position. Sometimes they feel threatened if you try and pick them up from standing. I had to do that with my speckled Sussex. After a while I...
Sounds like chicken complaining to me. Mine do that if I visit them without treats. My hens are loud. All day. Egg songs, chatter etc. Like hey where’s the stuff?! One of mine tries to peck my feet occasionally depending on what I’m wearing. Sometimes she thinks there’s bugs on me. Do you handle...
