Ideal Poultry Langshans - Show Me Your Eggs!

Update: 2 of 3 Black Langshans are now laying. BeBe started at 24 weeks, and then Frida Bakawlo laid an adorable, 29g, speckled brown egg 2 days shy of their 6-month/26-week birthday (at the bottom right of the egg photo).

Frida then immediately started laying bigger eggs, 40-45g, browner than BeBe's pink eggs. The Brahmas continue to lay in the 35-40g range. The Brahmas used to make double yolks a couple times a week, but the Langshans have only laid singles. Their yolks are a little smaller and darker gold than the Brahmas'.

<Edit to add that the lighter eggs in the top 1/2 of the photo are all from our Buff Brahmas, while the Langshan eggs are at the bottom of the photo. No filtering. That's about a week's worth of eggs from our 5 laying pullets.>

I know all this because one of our 12-week EEs tested positive for roundworms a few weeks ago, so we're discarding eggs while the whole flock's detoxing from 2 doses of Panacur. The silver lining is it's fun to collect them and compare things like shell color and yolks.

It's not surprising the Langshans are laying bigger eggs because they're really big birds. See them next to the Brahmas in the below photos. Also, their tails are on fleek.

The last holdout of this now 27-week-old bunch of birdies to lay is a Black Langshan named Pinkie. She should start soon. Excited to see if she lives up to her name with pink eggs, too.

Hey @3KillerBs , look: pixelated!

It's from the Black Langshan Frida Bakawlo. She's only been laying a few weeks and her colors aren't consistent yet, so this probably won't happen again, but it's pretty.

Photo is from an iPhone with no editing. The light egg in back is from our Buff Brahma Peep.

So beautiful!!!!!

I’m still waiting for our blue langshans first eggs! They’re 26 weeks on Friday. Taking their sweet time. But...it looks like they developed fowl pox last week. It seems like a mild case but they all have spots now. I’m thinking this might delay things. Not sure...I’ve been getting speckled eggs from our speckled Sussex and pink from our BO. Love your updates and pictures!! Thank you!!

Thanks for posting! It makes sense the pox could slow laying while their systems focus on recovery. Ours are laying half as many eggs as usual since the cool weather started. They have a bunch of new feathers growing in, so I figured their systems were focused on glorious winter coats instead of laying :)

Of course, Langshans are supposed to be late bloomers anyway. I've yet to see our last Langshan in a nest box, and she's 32 weeks. I thought she was the source of a few eggs laid off the roost last month because everybody else knows about nesting boxes. Maybe I've just been missing her ducking into the boxes. Either way, it's not confirmed that she's actually laying yet.

Get well soon to your ladies!

My girls are looking rough with their pox but today was the first day all of them laid! Our langshans are exactly 6 months! One of the langshans laid on the coop floor so hopefully she’ll figure out the nest box soon. All of my eggs look the same to me minus the one with freckles lol we have speckled Sussex, buff Orpington, and the blue langshans. The four in the pic are all from different breeds. Interested to see how the eggs will develop blooms or if this is it! Lol

How lovely!! Congratulations on having everyone laying, and hope they continue to feel better. Laying seems like a good sign!

The bloom on our Langshan eggs does look like it's getting heavier, and they didn't lay bloom consistently until a couple weeks into laying. Frida Bakawlo still lays "pixelated" eggs, as 3killerBs says (see pic from 9/6, above), but they also seem to be turning a deeper mauve underneath the white speckles.

A BO, Speckled Sussex, and 2 Langshans sounds like the sweetest, prettiest little flock ever.

Thank you!! Although their pox are looking gnarly I’m hoping they’ve turned a corner. Compared to some pictures online it seems mild but hopefully they get back to themselves soon.

I love hearing about your flock! Your pictures are really clear and beautiful and helpful! Feel free to always post pictures of your eggs bc I’ll always be interested! haha I think it’s been worth the wait bc they really are the sweetest. When my kids are on the swing set they go to that corner to hang out and talk to the kids lol it’s so funny. I’m surprised they’ve been our loudest talkers! We tried to get quiet breeds but I think that’s impossible ha. They’ll perch on us or “ask” to be picked up any time we’re with them. They love their people! It’s been a great little flock so far. Thank you for your sweet comments. 🤗
