Okay so as I mentioned I’m behind in the thread and also here at the end. An awkward place to be but let’s go with it. 😬 I’ll get this worked out as I read through.
Here’s my story. I’ve been involved in chickens for four or so years. I built my dream house in an equestrian neighborhood that...
Opinions here? I had a seemingly totally healthy bird dead this morning when we went out to the coop. It looks to me like a heart attack. Neck bent to the ground, wings outstretched.
ive recently decided to necropsy any death to ensure I’m managing my flock as best as possible. Would you...
This is why I love this thread and am so thankful for your years of work to educate and share knowledge . I have no interest in showing my birds and participating in that world. It seems to be a bit political at times. I remember like two years ago when I first got interested in marans I came...
Thank you! So much information and things to come back to and study. It will be so nice to see your notes for strengths you would consider for these girls while going through your posts in the thread. Maybe I’ll find good examples of what I should be looking for in a cockerel this winter.
so it...
Thank you! It’s so interesting how much they have changed in a few weeks. We are listing our place and moving whenever we sell, so I’m thinking I am going to need to change plans for how long I would be keeping grow-out birds.
Updated photos:
1 best overall? Lays an egg that was spotted with almost black flecks. Slightly more oblong egg that is evening out in color now and almost a 7.
2. Lays the darkest egg. Consistently an 8. Her cushioning seems to have flattened out the last few weeks.
overhead of 1 and 2. 2...
Finally sitting down the last week to start going through this entire and I’m just on page 25 of the thread. WOW how lucky we are to have this thread with all of this information. I can’t wait to continue and learn. I’m keeping a list of questions in a book and marking them off as they get...
I think dont be afraid to share what you know or are working on even mistakes help us all through learning.
love to see that even if it’s not preferable by some that blaze came from such a pairing.
so best blues are a black cock over blue hen? Are the resulting blacks worth anything to the program?
is BLC/BLC best to make splash? Are the resulting black and blues worth anything?
ah!!!! They’re getting darker!
the spotted egg is from my nicer pullet. The dark egg is the solid black with extra cushion. I think I’ll probably keep her around anyway with an egg like this!
Thank you. I’ve been feeling I’d like to set up a trio to start from, but I’d really like to have my hens at least a year old or more before they’re used for breeding the first of “my” stock.
Woo! All my pullets are laying! Plus, my Blue who just went broody started laying Again and her eggs went a full shade darker than they were before. Finally getting some dark eggs from my own girls in my hands
I probably only have 1 pullet I would breed from.
what’s anyones thoughts on...
Aw, thank you! She and my goslings are my literal shadows, Im surprised they're not also in this pic.
She is a karakachan livestock guardian dog, she is almost 5 months old. She is the very best dog I have ever had. <3

which is more desirable for an egg... one with spots that reach a darker number or an egg with uniform color that isn’t as dark as another’s spots?
Great info about housing together.
okay so my question is the red one. He is a TANK! Is that the variety specifically or are you working more utility with his line? He really begs my attention!
