I had a look at your cockerels . here what I see; Cock 1 = is almost faultless is a keeper for sure Head = solid and pretty comb = nice size and texture .free from sprig and coronation . wattle = medium well formed Eyes = pretty orange Ears tufts = nice color Beak = solid nicely curved and nice horn color . Neck = solid well curve at the head level .lush with nice copper.( I can no see any flame need close up photos of his hackle) Body type = Great back = long ,wide and tilted well colored nice copper Lancet = long lush and well colored. Chest = wide ,nice black with a coppery spot ( Excellent ). Wing = well tucked in . nice black shiny wing bow and wing triangle. Tail = a little long but nice shape and form well angled . well put together from the rear Shanks = nice color not to dark .some pink toes and rear. Feet = enough feathers. strait and solid. well spaced . he s going a be a great breeder and Show quality bird. I don't want you to think I posted this because he said nice things about my cockerel. Honestly I was on the fence about this cockerel because I have never seen a good BCM Rooster in person. It really helped me. Some of the things I thought were not good were and vice versa. The second cockerel is in another post.

    thanks for the thread.

I would like to know if the cockerels/roos should have many feathers or just a few on their feet.

btw, I like your cockerel no1.

    this is my marco:

he got more copper now and started to mate (hatched on april 2nd). her crowing is still a baby talk.

    this is his sister luna:

she has much less feathers on her feet. her mom had a few feathers on her feet as well. unfortunately she died recently.

It is hard for me to tell much from the picture. How old was Marco in this pic? I like that name.

Cock 2 : too many fault
bad body type triangle rather than rectangle
    Too tall .
Tail too high and open structure .
Comb has a sprig on the front
    shanks too dark

he will make good coq au vin .

That's good. I like Coq au Vin. [IMG]

marco was almost 3 months old in that pic. he looks ok, he even lost white feathers on his wings. but he, like his father and brother, has much more feathers on his feet than his mother and sister.

RedBanks, Just a heads up for you, Not all Countrys have the same SOP for the Marans, With this being an Internatioal thread you might want to check into the other SOP. With the other threads we have always went with the APA SOP since that was where most of the people were from.

Good Luck with the thread, Don

Hi RedBank. thank you for starting this thread .

I want to make some thing clear at first. we discus the French standard( original) here .we have nothing to do with other SOP belong to other country. they deviate from the original .that a problem .every country try to breed marans to there taste . NOT good for the uniformity of the breed.
Same what the English did .they took the marans and breed t with out feathered leg .WHAT they trying to prove .the MARANS ARE FRENCH CHOOKS. and they are going to stay that way.

for me there is only one standard and the Only standard .THE FRENCH MARANS STANDARD .from the FRENCH MARANS CLUB DE FRANCE the rest are copies .I m not interested on them .they can breed what ever they like .not my business .they can do what ever they want with they chooks.

one breed .one standard .doesn t matter what country.

Hi RedBank some thing I did not mantion about your cock 1. look at the 2 ed photos .you can see how strait he is and wide from the rear .his tail well wide at the base and not open at the top .DOES form a nice pyramid shape . great point.

his hackle have some flame at the bottom end that fine and accepted .

NOTE; for breeding .we only use a BCM with a flame in his hackle if he has a good colored ears tufts ,spotted chest and well red shoulder. this 4 point are well related to produce a well marked progeny.

your second cock is well colored . excellent copper and body marking. BECAUSE he s pure BCM he could be used over a Black pullet with a correct back and well angled tail.
if I had him here I ll use him over my Black hens. and cull a lot .

culling does not bother me .I only keep 6/10 per cent from each hatch any way. this year we kept about 90 from over 2500 chicks hatched.

    Hi Chickengr.

your cockerel and pullet have a nice feathered shanks . the cockerel has more than a pullet .

the cockerel is a good type .good mass. and nice flat long back .nice coppery feathers coming along .that great.

the pullet is far I can not see her hackle ,need a good photos of them close up from different angle .

    Cheers.
