    Mareks?

I had one bird develop scissor paralysis at 9 weeks and have to be culled. She was the only one who did that. The rest of my birds all survived the initial infection and began showing symptoms at one year to approximately 18 months of age. When they began showing signs of secondary Marek's...

    Mareks?

I'm so sorry to hear that. :hugs Sounds as though you are dealing with a double whammy. Bad enough MD but ALV also? You know of course that your other birds are more than likely going to show positive for MD. It will be hard for them not to. But like I said, hang in there and don't give up.

    Mareks?

I think that is pretty typical for Marek's hens. Mine either stopped laying or only laid an occasional egg for me. I have two old girls who have developed 'water belly' that I am keeping an eye on. Like you I won't cull as long as they are eating and acting like they are still enjoying life...

    Mareks?

Thank, @tripletfeb for the tag and @Eggsandbeyond, I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. Rest assured you aren't alone. It is a club nobody wants to belong to but a lot do. It's late here so for now I'm going to invite you to read my article on my experiences with Marek's...

Comment by 'microchick' in article 'Killer in the Shadows. How My Flock and I Learned to Deal With Marek's Disease'

You are to be commended. You have done all you can do and I salute your determination. There is the line of thought that resistance or a degree of resistance is passed on from the vaccinated hen to the chick. My bantams have all been bred from vaccinated feed store (Orscheln's at the time)...

9 month old pullet very weak, not eating or drinking

:hugs Thank you, Becky. As for the meat bird question, I'm not certain. Marek's usually hits initially around 9 weeks of age. My first bird with ocular Marek's presented with 'funky eye' as I call it when she was about the same age as your bird is. She was a buff Orpington and was setting her...

9 month old pullet very weak, not eating or drinking

Good morning all and thankyou for the tag @Wyorp Rock. @tripletfeb I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this. I regret to say that I agree with everyone that you are more than likely dealing with ocular Marek's in your flock. Everything fits the symptomology. Birds with MD have problems...

My roosters injured a hawk what do I do?

Just read through this and you have a truly amazing flock. We have all sorts of birds of prey here. From Hawks to Bald Eagles, they have all either circled my coop or set in nearby trees eyeing the run like a starving person at an all you can eat buffet. If your birds are in a run, do you...

Coronavirus, Covid 19 Discussion and How It Has Affected Your Daily Life Chat Thread

Agreed. Same here. That is what we read. The abstract that is. We have been following various news leads about new studies that are now coming out about the 'powers that be' now admitting that there is a 'slight' increase in cardiac and brain disorders with the jab. I have the feeling that...

Thank you for your kind words @ChookieChicken. Just remember that you aren't alone with this and we are here to help whenever you need it. Blessings to you and your flock. Micro/Becky

    Buff Orpington

Thank you @coach723 you explained it perfectly. My husband treated a lot of it in his practice. It is extremely painful and extremely devastating to vision. She could have a secondary bacterial infection but that isn't what is causing the eye problem. You can give your feathered baby a 81mg...

    Buff Orpington

Groannnnnn. Poor baby. There is definitely something inflammatory going on in that eye, @ChookieChicken. If the vet had done a more careful examination on Chip's eye they would have seen a uveitis probably caused by a herpes virus....aka ocular Marek's disease. Everything looks 'steamy' on her...

    Mareks

Cochins, Orpingtons, Welsummers and Speckled Sussex come to mind along with Japanese Bantams and as @coach723 mentioned, Silkies. As far as resistance, Egyptian Fayoumi, White Leghorn and Naked Neck Turkens are the only ones that come to mind at the moment. I don't think anything is 100% when...

    Mareks

Thanks for the tag, @Bkaye. @Slicker chicker I'm so sorry. Marek's sux. The end. But hope is not lost, that is the good news. Your history sounds pretty much a carbon copy of every post anyone has ever made about their experience with the disease. Their birds die, a lot of birds and they...

    The Old Folks Home

Thanks, @Sally PB. She was the first Amish barnyard cross hen that I hatched from my first hatching. Set 11 eggs in my incubator. 10 roosters and 1 pullet, Minnie. If I was doing any digging in the run she would be in the hole supervising. I'd have to get a hand under her fluffy butt and push...

We had a nuthatch do that a couple weeks ago. They fly into our radio room window when the lights are on in there. Found the little guy quite diseased. Weird that 9 times out of 10 they will bounce off and fly away. Hi guys. Sun came out here today also. Temp of 50. Snow is 99% gone. Yay! Did a...

    The Old Folks Home

Yeah, first day it got out of the teens, I came in from taking care of the chickens and DH asked me how the weather was. I said 'nice' temp was 28. He thought it was funny that it had been so cold for so long that even temps in the 20s felt comfortable.

Amen. I'm surprised the pharmacy didn't catch it first. They usually have red box warnings that pop up when all the patient's meds are listed and a new one is contra indicated because of a serious interaction. I've personally had that happen with the pharmacy calling me and telling me they...

Only up to 38 here. The snow is about half melted. Sloppy, slushy Muduary here. Hard to believe we are almost into February already. Right now after the -17 -18 degree temps we have been having I'm trying not to complain about temps hovering in the upper 30s.
