Keep checking places like FB Marketplace, Craigslist, and Freecycle.org. I'm sure free pallets will show up from time to time. There are certain businesses who get them in all the time. I think one business I got free pallets from was a brewery...
I don't have the exact length that I decided on, but I actually made the planks shorter than 21 inches to save on pallet wood. I think it worked out better than if I had made them the height of the base and an added bonus is the planks aren't in contact with the ground.
Thank you for checking it out!
The 30° bevel on the slats is not necessary for stability - it only makes the corners fit together and look nicer. If you don't bevel the edges on the slats the slats will have to be slightly narrower and you'll probably have to cover the corners with some kind...
No problem! I know the drawing is a bit small inside the post. Maybe I'll make the post width a bit bigger.
I'll be updating the photos in the blog post when I put flowers in it. Very excited for that. 😁
Thanks so much! Yes, the angle is 30° - I noted this in the drawing. The 2x4s were cut with the miter saw and the pallet slats at each end also have a 30° bevel cut with the table saw.
I have finally put together a post about how I built my pallet old-fashioned well planter! Here is the link for anyone interested: https://rusticrobinworkshop.blogspot.com/2024/04/old-fashioned-well-planter.html
@ChicksnMore @fuzzi
WHAAAT?!!! I've had a wagon like that for 15 years and never knew the handle could be converted to attach to a mower. Not that I need it because I have a large mower trailer, but it could come in handy one day.
I have three of those ugly septic accesses in my yard so I've been thinking about covering them for a while. I think the old-fashioned well would be quite heavy at that size. I can lift the one I built by myself, but it is heavy.
One thing I thought of was making a half whiskey barrel-type...
That is a good idea, and I have added a "ladder" before. However, hardware cloth is quite sharp, so I'd stick with rough wood or cutting grooves. Usually the birds build their nests up to near the bottom of the hole, but sometimes there are smaller nests.
1-1/2" holes are typical for bluebird...
You're welcome! I do speak from experience. And I am involved with the local Audubon and other wild bird groups. It's great you're going into this knowing that birdhouses should be cleaned regularly.
Yes, that is the way to do it. I use 3/4" pieces. The thicker the wood the longer it will...
This is a good use of smaller pallet pieces! But the design needs some modifications.
1. There is not enough ventilation. Vent holes drilled at the top of the sides work okay, but a gap left at the top of the sides is even better.
2. It could use drainage. This can be achieved by drilling...
I will be sure to post the project page when I'm finished! And, no, I definitely do not have fine woodworking skills. I prefer to stick to "rustic" projects so I don't need to be precise.
Thank you! It is my own design, but I did get ideas from photos on the internet and the idea for the pallet planks fastened on the inside of the frame from you, so thank you for that!! I don't like following written plans. I'm weird like that. 😆
I might post some dimensions and process...
My latest pallet project! I've been thinking about making an old-fashioned well to cover our wellhead for a long time and I finally gathered and broke down enough pallets and had good enough weather to build it. Took me two afternoons. It cost me nothing (except for the screws and glue)!
