I’ve been monitoring my sick hen and she seems to be slowly getting worse. She’s spending most of her day laying in the dirt. She doesn’t eat hardly anything and when she does she nibbles at it before stopping. The only consistent thing is she drinks water. She’s also refusing to eat or drink...
Unfortunately, she didn’t make it.
She lasted a few more weeks past my last post. She started to improve, eating more everyday. In the end we had a few cold nights and she got chilled and passed in the night. My guess is she just didn’t have any reserve on her to stay warm.
We’re a week in. My sick bird doesn’t really chase them, more so waits for them to come near and then she tries to peck them. My other bird is the crazy one.
Also she’s the same this morning, her butt is a little dirty and she’s slower. It was colder last night which could play into the slowness.
She looks like doesn’t feel well. Hiding in a darker corner and picking at the wet food. She also is pooping small amounts and some resemble lighter in color cecal poops but hard to tell if that’s what they really are. They look like the soft poop in my first post.
Anything else her symptoms...
My hen’s crop was empty this morning which is good considering it wasn’t yesterday. She is still not acting 100% like herself but I do see some improvement in her behavior. She was very eager to get wet food this morning.
She hasn’t laid in a few days now. Will it take her some more time before...
Thank you for the article it was very helpful.
After refeeling her crop it seems to be about the size of a ping pong ball (or a tad smaller) and the material is firm like this morning. It doesn’t appear to show as much as this morning so I’m wonder if it’s gone down some. Having read that...
One additional thing is her crop didn’t seem to empty out all the way last night. Yesterday evening I could clearly see both of the big birds crops were full and my one birds didn’t empty out all the way. I can still see the bump, but it’s not as hard as yesterday. It’s contents feel firmer but...
The chicks do have access to chicks food when they are put back in their space.
Her egg is usually brown in color but her last 2 eggs were lighter in color. A day missed between the eggs laid. I didn’t open it but her yolks are usually more yellow instead of a deep yellow when her shells are...
Everyone seems fine other than my one hen. The only difference is the chicks have been eating the layer feed more than their chick feed so some of their poop is softer than usual, which I believe is the change in diet.
Hello,
I have a hen whose not acting herself the last few days. I integrated 5 chicks almost a week ago with my 2 one year old hens. They don’t sleep together however, they do spend most of the daylight hours together. Things have been going well but since the tradition I’ve noticed my hen...
Thank you for the link to the anatomy of a chickens mouth it was very helpful.
Her tongue was definitely too far her throat, still not sure what happened but at least she’s not struggling anymore.
From the ingredient list, I’ve found Oregano Oil, Rosemary Oil, and Cinnamon Oil being used in the feed.
It smells like a bag of pizza when you open it, no complaint there.
We were able to get some tools and investigate her tongue. It doesn’t appear to have anything around it pulling it down from what we could see. There was just mucus. She also smells of throw up, which I can only assume isn’t a good thing.
Not too sure how to help her now.
Is there some other...
Wow this is very eye opening, I had no idea nor every thought that it could hurt them by feeding medicated food.
I will definably consider this with the next chicks I raise. Thanks
What a beautiful bird.
She’s made it another night and honestly it’s hard to tell if she’s getting better. Her convulsions don’t appear to be as bad as they were but that could just be her getting tired.
She does act hungry. Any suggestions on a liquid food I could give her? She’s also standing...
I was able to look inside of her mouth. I have no idea what I was looking for but the only strange thing was that her tongue was towards the back of her throat. I’m not sure why this would be but I found it weird. And the more I thought about it her tongue hasn’t been hanging out at the end of...
