Long story short is last year we had some illness in the flock that I was worried about so we took some birds in to be culled/necropsied. They found nothing. This spring the chickens that were left that I still wondered about were showing breathing issues so I culled them. They had a fat pad...

I just started making my own feed mixture w/ whole grains. I ferment BOSS, corn, and millet, and sprout barley, wheat, oats, and flax. I never had problems fermenting layer mash, but I'm not sure I'm fermenting the whole grains right. At day 3 I get white fuzziness on top of the water that...
Okay, so last year I got some chickens and a duck that weren't that well taken care of . One of my ducks got sick and I freaked out that I had brought something into the flock that had infected everyone. We ended up taking 5 birds to be culled/necropsied and they were all "fine". The sick...
Oh, good, so they're fine to eat even though they look weird, then? I'm glad someone else has seen this! Candling them before selling is a good idea. Thanks!
Thanks, it would be great to see that picture. :) Today we caught a bunch of ducks to check them for Bumblefoot and one of the girls I brought in to treat is one who I've wondered if she's part Rouen because it seems like her chest and belly are draggier than the others. I felt her belly and...
What do you mean by "heavier"? I have some hens who have almost a flap of wobbly flesh that hangs down between their legs in line with their breastbone. Is that what you mean? I was actually wondering about that just today!
Yesterday we got 8 duck eggs and today we got 7. (We have 12 hens...
There for awhile I was only getting 2-3 eggs per day from my ducks when I have 12 hens that could be laying. We switched to fermenting our feed, and now I'm getting 8ish eggs per day, yay! But I keep getting some odd eggs. At first I thought it was because they were old, but I've been making...
Okay, so I got two more weird eggs.
This one looks almost cloudy? The yolk was firm, though. Maybe that was a mixture of white and yellow yolks?
And this one was collected today, definitely laid today. It's fertile, but that mass of light gray/almost blue is next to the fertile area...
Oh man, I'm so sorry. It makes it so much worse having to tell kids. :(
Ours did that before too. That's when we started only feeding them at night. They come in for dinner and we close the door. It's the only thing that would motivate them to get into a safe location.
((((HUGS))))
I know that when ducks molt they lose their green heads and then eventually they get them back. But we seem to have a real issue with green heads around here!
Last spring we hatched out one Silver Appleyard drake. His name is Blinky. Blinky's head never fully turned green. Then last fall...
VERY interesting! So maybe what I was seeing was white yolk? Especially since it was around the column of white yolk? Wow.
And looking at the tissue of the reproductive tract, it totally looks like what is in this picture could have been a piece of tissue that broke off during the...
So, a few weeks ago I cracked open an egg (unfortunately INTO my muffin batter, no more muffins!) that had kind of a gray film or something over half the yolk. It didn't smell bad, but I figured it had just been old. Today I cracked open one that had the same type of gray coating over part of...
