BYC'er ON TRIAL! *** UPDATE*** and Video pg 2

Whoever wrote that article was not only biased, but misinformed. They thought roosters were needed to get eggs, and that 'one rooster could do the job', without giving any thought to roosters as flock guardians and fathers of all those fluffy chicks . Good luck with your chicken fight!

in my city Ordinances they talk about dogs. i cant find chickens in it

Sometimes there's nothing in the codes at all about chickens. If you're absolutely sure that there's nothing against chickens, then get some. If in doubt, call your town hall and they'll be happy to explain. The 12 chick minimum is so that people don't buy them for Easter gifts and them abandon...

Nothing in city ordinances about livestock: Quincy, MA

Yep. Just make sure that you keep them clear of all nuisance laws. You probably shouldn't get any roos, just to be safe.

Where do you live that permits chickens?

I'm in Illinois, too. They're allowed on lots larger than 1 acre in St. Charles. Chickens are allowed, but no slaughter, in Chicago.

Humans catching diseases from chicken poo?

A friend told me that chicken poo, when sitting for a few days in the coop, will gather spores that can inflict a serious lung disease on whoever breathes them in. Is there any truth in this? If so, what is it called and how can it be prevented? Thanks!

    Is coop insulation required?

It's a small coop, and I live near Chicago. I guess I should insulate then?

    Is coop insulation required?

This is my first year in Illinois and I don't really know exactly how cold it gets, but I wouldn't think below 0. My coop will be attached to a shed and will be housing BO, BA and SLW hens. I've been hearing so many conflicting opinions on whether or not the coop needs to be insulated, so I just...

    Breed & Gender??

Faith looks like a pullet to me. As for breed, maybe an Easter Egger? Willow looks very roo-ish, but I agree with Reesepoultry that it might be a little early for sexing.

Served notice - making us take our children's pets away?

Point out to them that raising backyard chickens costs more than buying eggs. If it doesn't even save you any money, I doubt that they could be considered "utility". But they are kept for pleasure. Therefore, they are pets! Good Luck!

Need help understanding local ordinance please....UPDATE :)

Quote: This is where they feel they have authority to say "no." So you need to find out what kind of conditions have been required of others, then file whatever paperwork is needed for the permit. I think that just means that if you live on less than 10 acres, they are allowed to make some...

    Eglu Panic

The Eglu is insulated with a double layer of thick plastic and claims to be suitable for both hot and cold weather. It is used all over England and it can get pretty cold there, so I think it will be fine. BTW - The Eglu really is a small coop and if you plan on keeping your chickens inside it...
