Whoever wrote that article was not only biased, but misinformed. They thought roosters were needed to get eggs, and that 'one rooster could do the job', without giving any thought to roosters as flock guardians and fathers of all those fluffy chicks . Good luck with your chicken fight!
Sometimes there's nothing in the codes at all about chickens. If you're absolutely sure that there's nothing against chickens, then get some. If in doubt, call your town hall and they'll be happy to explain.
The 12 chick minimum is so that people don't buy them for Easter gifts and them abandon...
A friend told me that chicken poo, when sitting for a few days in the coop, will gather spores that can inflict a serious lung disease on whoever breathes them in. Is there any truth in this? If so, what is it called and how can it be prevented?

Willow looks very roo-ish, but I agree with Reesepoultry that it might be a little early for sexing.
Point out to them that raising backyard chickens costs more than buying eggs. If it doesn't even save you any money, I doubt that they could be considered "utility". But they are kept for pleasure. Therefore, they are pets!

The Eglu is insulated with a double layer of thick plastic and claims to be suitable for both hot and cold weather. It is used all over England and it can get pretty cold there, so I think it will be fine.
BTW - The Eglu really is a small coop and if you plan on keeping your chickens inside it...
