I still can believe my chukars are still laying. I know there not fertile. Hope they stop soon. I don't know what to do with all this eggs. I tired feeding them back to them, but it seems a lot to give them. Hopefully with cold front they'll stop. Temp is going to drop to low 60's for highs. You...
I am in need of 4 valley female quail for this fall. If anyone has any close to Las Vegas, NV or can ship. Were still up in upper 90's. But should start to cool off soon.
Thanks
If you ever make it out to Vegas, I have a few young chukars. I know it's a way from No. Cali. I think have 1 male and 2 females. There about 4 weeks old. Might be a bit old for your lil chick.
Sure you could cut chukar wings, it's not recomended by most. They'll still grow new feathers every year. I would only cut them if they where in a secured area away from predators. I just believe upland game birds wing's shouldn't.
My hens started in early March and are still laying, but don't think there fertile. I need to check. I heard of them laying all the way to Novemeber from what I read in Gazette mag.
Sexing new born chicks is pretty easy. Males have a more round head bigger. Females thinner, longer head. I know it tough to tell without any other chicks. I usually wait about 2 to 4 weeks before I give them anything else to eat like mealworms. Just keep it on gamestarter for atleast 6 weeks...
he look like a she. I had a few where only hatches or others don't make it. She'll be fine to be raised alone. I had one we raised that way, now he wants to be inside with us, and loves to be handled. Pretty neat how people inprint on them. But am sure that'll change when he has his hens.
It depends. They usually fly short distances. But in the wild I have seen them head up high then glide down the hill easly 1000 yrds. Makes hunting them a pain. They do flush a lot like quail. There wing feathers are a lot like quail not made to fly to far.
Males have a bigger head, more round. Females have longer skinner head. I couldn't find a good pic.
Female far back center. 2-Males right. I think the one with the head down is a female. hard to tell. I thought I had better pics.
The bigger the better. I would do something like 6'x12'. They should only be on the ground if you live in a dry climate or have a roof over the pen. I house 1 male to 3 females in 6'x6' pens. This gives them room to run around and drag there wing on the ground for there display.
Do any of you have Valley quail chicks? I just hatch a small batch and ended up with all males except one. so was hoping to buy some eggs or 3 hens chicks. I know it's late for eggs and maybe way to hot to ship live chicks. Maybe some can save me a few hens and ship this fall?
Thanks
Dom
Ok made a few changes.. Anyone have have any pic's of double deck pen showing poop catcher? I was just thinking a couple pull out shelf's fill with sand or wood chips.
Yeah I figured it be small. I am just so limited in my yard. I like your idea JJMR794.. I just need to figure out a tray for top level, So the bottom birds don't get poop on there heads. I might lower it a foot closer to the ground. I don't want it to be above cmu wall. I'll revise the drawing...
So I have decided to try and build a new pen to house Valley's and Gambles. I have drawn up this quick drawing. Not sure if this would work or not. Please let me know what you pro's think. I was thinking maybe housing 4 pairs on each side. The reaseaon I put plywood sheating on sides is because...
