I do think the culling is a good idea, but I am worried about them suddenly being too big for the housing as fast as these chicks grow. And how it will time out, etc, such as finding ourselves needing to cull birds the week of Christmas. At how many weeks can you anticipate starting to cull...
We have them in a rubbermaid brooder right now with heat lamp. What we really need is an idea for cheap outdoor housing. We were prepared to house about 15, but somehow our order was doubled, and we need additional housing for about 15 birds. These birds get so big so fast!!! Any suggestions?
We have laying birds and turkeys. So i thought raising meat birds would be a good project for my boys. So we ordered 15 birds they have to have 3 each to show for the county stock show the end of january .today we get the baby chicks and we got twice as many birds as i ordered and i am not...
For about a week and a half I have been hearing an odd sounding crow. It sounded like a juvenile male rooster. We've got a golden sebright hen that sat and hatched out a dozen eggs, and we moved her and the baby birds outside the main chicken run. I thought one of the hatchlings was already...
Didn't really take it as criticism, been way more critical of myself for the way it happened. Also I guess I wanted to point out the old "never trust a predator" rule....not that we intentionally left our "predators" to where they could get to our babies, but I really wouldn't have thought the...

This is EXACTLY what he did. It was so funny! He was fanning his tail "nubs" before they even feathered out. I miss our turkey babies. They seemed to have so much more "personality" than our chicken babies have had.

For the record, none of our felines or canines have EVER shown interest in our bird brooder, which was a Graco play pen with a piece of wood covering the top, prior to this. Have had 20-30 sets of baby birds (chickens and quail) and never any problems til the turkeys. Our ten year old lazy cat...
The baby tom turkey that we had was exhibiting some very "male" characteristics from very early on. We had a Rio Grande and a Naragansette. By the time the Rio Grande was a week old, he (we assume) was strutting in response to "turkey talk." Just saying "turk turk turk turk" would make him...
We were having things ripped off our young quail and at first we didn't think anything of much size could be getting in the bird barn. It also killed 6 young chickens, but never bothered the full grown ones. It turned out to be a skunk....my husband trapped it and shot it. Thank God because...
My first taste of goat milk was from a Nubian about 10 years ago. I loved it and couldn't get enough of it!!!! The next year my father in law gave us milk from an Alpine doe, and it was horrible!!! If it had been the first goat milk I ever tasted, I'd have sworn off it FOREVER!!!
I don't...
Updating.....they FINALLY, after much frustration DID ship our eggs. I will say that in the packaging, you DO get what you pay for, we only had 2 eggs that were broken, so with the extra eggs they sent, we came out okay there. BUT, out of the 80 eggs, NONE were the white A & M's. Invoice said...
well it strikes again i am going in the morning to pick up a heavy bred nubian doe that is three years old and a heavy milker.as a trade for two bucklings now i think that is a good deal.and a short time fix for the disease.
