Hey my geese have recently over the past few weeks really started ganging up on other geese. I assume this has to do with breeding season coming up but have never had this issue before. Its sub zero temps out and they are picking on each other to the point of bleeding and lots of feather loss...
I stole my hen's after they hatched. I have never had mandarin ducklings before....I am feeding the Dumor chick starter (non medicated) for ducks, chicks and whatever else. Hopefully this is ok. They are very shy but clearly play in the water when I'm not watching (messy little boogers). So...
6 healthy ducklings!! I couldn't wait....I went to get them and they had all hatched!! This is so awesome, I have had Mandarins for over 3 years hoping for ducklings.....
I have a mama Mandarin duck in a wood duck nest box right now. She was sitting on 6 eggs but I don't think many were good - I candeled but only confirmed 2 or 3 moving but left the other eggs just in case....I had a hunch and peeked in with a flashlight tonight and saw 2 ducklings for sure. I...
Mandarins are a wild breed, therefore more flighty than domestics. You will stress them out more trying to handle them, they are more for a beautiful thing to look at. They are beautiful though:)
I have a barn with an extended outer "porch" that is all enclosed. I have bantam chickens and my mandarins in together. They all seem to be doing great. They've been together over a year.
I am considering putting some goose eggs in the bator for the first time ever. Only just recently got into geese. Since I have a hen laying, I might as well try, right? I was wondering if they are similar to ducks as I feel pretty comfortable with them. Does anyone have any insight? Is...
I was candling my broodys' eggs and there were soooo many I ended up dropping 2. One cracked and bled a little bit and the other just cracked at the bottom. I felt awful as I have never done this before. I placed them in the incubator 3 days ago and expect them to hatch within the next day...
Woohoo!!!! I came home from lunch to see it not able to walk with its hobbled back legs kicked out behind him. So I undid the hobble to see what happened. It's WALKING!!! Moving the leg normal, a little off because it has gotten used to the legs being taped together. I hope I am not...
It can definately use the leg, just not well. The Nutri-drench has niacin in it, I have no idea how much to give of pills, etc. I don't think the chickens hurt it because I didn't see any sign of that. I am still thinking it had something to do with switching from a smooth surface to a rough...
Actually I am not familiar with what the air sac should look like but I am going to start checking that. I was reading about other poultry eggs and marking the air sac so I will do this with my chicken eggs while candling.
I live in Michigan and I am pretty sure there is some humidity, I just don't have added sources. My heat is not on in the house and chips go stale overnight so I am thinking it must not be too low.
Thank you for the kind words. I hate losing babies. I have some eggs to steal from my broodies and another batch in the LG due for lockdown in 7 days. Hopefully it will be a better 2 weeks!
Ok, so after losing yet another batch, I opened them to investigate. I am thinking my humidity is too high because these chicks seemed pretty wet. There was some fluid like goo that came out with them (more than normal I think) so I am going to cut back on the humidity. I always thought you...
