Heather Hayes, Armstrong, BC. Canada...
No, I had not bathed her recently. She is just a Production Leghorn, left over from the kids' 4-H projects. Her comb doesn't even lay over properly, just a backyard layer I keep in the range pen because I don't have the heart to cull her, and she still lays huge white eggs. Here's another photo...
Anyone else have these? I got a trio of Silvers from Duane Urch at the OH National two weeks ago, and set my first small hatch of eggs this morning. They are not in the best of condition right now, so no photos to post, but I am really liking the looks of them, and looking forward to working...
Yep. The Livestock Conservancy has them on the "Watch" list: http://www.livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/conservation-priority-list#Chickens
LOL!
I was reminded of this as I was washing birds for shows this fall (all by myself.) Those darned Buckeyes were so wide it was a struggle to keep them in the bucket and not flap their wings. Felt like I needed three hands, two to hold the bird, one to wash it.
Made me miss my Dutch...
At the risk of veering (not trying to do so overmuch, this point applies to poultry in a way), one of the things I've learned over the years about a horse's ability to bear weight is, it's not how tall the horse is, but how broad the frame. A broader frame, with a bigger bone structure, can bear...

You can see more about them on my...
Oh yes, Buckeyes are my favorite breed too, and I think they'd be perfect for Michigan! Having lived "up north" for many years (southern WI and northern MN, not to mention being from Cleveland origainally), I am familiar with the sorts of winters you get up there, and know the breed would do...
Oh Michelle, I am sorry. I think you made the best decision you could for her, and it certainly sounds as if you did everything you could to help her, so please don't feel badly that way.
It's never easy.
I am sorry about the loss of your bird, it can be very hard, I know.
Did you do any sort of autopsy to try to determine the cause? Have your chickens been wormed and de-mited this fall? Sometimes a heavy parasite load can kill a bird who might otherwise show no signs of illness.
Let us know if you need a good source for homeopathic remedies. I've been using homeopathy for almost 20 years now, and find it works really well on humans as well as animals.
