I have 2 Golden White Layers from Metzers. They are drakes, and they are nice ducks, they don't fight with any one, in fact, they are wusses, last year I had to introduce some new ducks, and they ran and hid and made my girls do the fighting! They are pure white not a dirty white. They are...
She has been sitting forever, I should have had ducklings by now. I had better candle the eggs she has rolled out and also the ones she is sitting on. I hope there are some viable ones, I really want her babies and really don't want to make her mad if she comes back to an empty nest. But I don't...
I have Golden White Layers which look just like Pekins to me, and I just love them too! I love having the big white ducks, I love all my other ducks, and the Runners are my favorite breed, but I couldn't imagine not having any all white ducks around.
This is probably a silly question........when a duck is sitting on her nest and the duckling starts hatching out of it's egg, does she still sit on it, or does she push it out to let it continue hatching. Does she push them out right before they start hatching?
I didn't know if they pushed eggs...
Ok, I have 2 runners I got as adults, super skittish and hate me. They had one baby and left it all alone at a day old.......my teenage ducks tried to kill it. My fault, my adults never bothered the first babies, so I didn't think I'd have a problem this time. Didn't count on the teenagers being...
No real duck house, just dog houses! But here is my enclosure. I still haven't tidied it up, cutting all the cable ties neatly....I am slowly replacing them with metal cage rings. It's not super pretty, esp the roof, but it works and the ducks are happy! Soon, I will add a bigger pool with a...
I love it!! When I finally put my larger pool in, (it's been sitting here for a year!), I am going to do this. I have lots of scrap wood around, and you have motivated me to try this.....seeing it helps a lot, thanks for posting pics!
...my last!
One of the other ducks sitting is a runner, and she is sharing a nest with a WH, so it will be interesting to see how she does. I *think* she will be good, she's been very loyal to the nest, tho lately she has been letting the WH do most of the sitting, but she is there every day...
I guess everyone has different experiences with their ducks............mine is, I have 8 females and 2 drakes. NOT enough females! Maybe my drakes have too much testosterone, but I feel so bad for all my girls. The drakes never stop harassing them....it's constant one after the other. I wonder...
I think they will calm down, all my ducks did that..........runners, harlequins, white layers. I think it's just a phase...........I hope, and you didn't just get skittery ones. Give it some time, I remember it took weeks for mine to settle down........I can't remember exactly, but I am thinking...
With Metzers you can order less than 10, but it costs a little more. I only ordered 6 and they put a little heat pack in with them, and they arrived healthy and happy.
I am not a duck expert, this is only my first year with them, but I have done tons of research, a lot of which may be bogus! What I have found, is people feed all kinds of things and the ducks do fine. I keep males and females together and free feed, and was told the drakes shouldn't have layer...
...goat and horse, and there is always a ton of leaves that fall off, so put a fresh batch in a bowl of water each night so they always have greens. I *think* if they aren't soaked, they can cause problems........I forget what, but I do remember they should be soaked. It's not their favorite...
My two runners are in the pics in this post below. I got them from Metzer's as day olds, and their temperaments are great, not skittish at all. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=365291
Oh I love the runners I raised from babies!! They are my favorite, the most friendly and definitely the leaders of the rest of the gang. The two that are skitterish, I got as adults from a guy who didn't handle them at all. I would love more, and I am hoping some of my babies will look like...
The 2 runners I raised from babies are really calm, and friendly. I bought 2 adult females last year so I would have more girls for my boys. They are very skitterish, and terrible mothers, I found one perfectly formed little duckling in half it's shell today that I think they killed by trampling...
Thank you! This is my first year with ducks, so it is all new to me. Now I am anxious to see what the other Runners and the Welsh babies will look like. I don't know which parent they take after, but I hope to get a male that looks like a Runner. I don't want to keep many of the males, but I...
