I currently have a 4x8 coop with a 20x8 closed in run for 6 hens (various breeds). These are our personal egg laying hens and pets. This set-up is great for them.
However, we are opening a country store in the Spring and we plan on selling a couple dozen eggs a day if not more. Now we will...
I was shocked and sad to find my rooster laying dead in the middle of my chicken run yesterday. I raised him from a chick. However, I went out today to collect the eggs and there were 8 eggs!!! I have 8 hens, but I've been getting about 6 a day. I have 1 Ameraucana that lays green eggs, but...
I just added 2 golden comets to my original flock of 6 hens and 1 rooster. My originals have not started laying yet but the 2 new hens started laying about 2 weeks ago. I just added them to my flock on Friday. They have laid eggs everywhere but in the nesting boxes. 2 eggs were even found...

Yeah I would think paper towels would absorb their mess, but it wouldn't dry out fast enough. Plus, some kind of loose material works way better than just a solid piece of cloth or something. As they move around, they can move that loose material over top of their poop and help to dry it out...
I used pine shavings that I bought at tractor supply. I bought the finely shaved bag. there was also a large shavings bag. Just whatever you do, do not use cedar shavings. But anything could work. You just want something that will absorb their excretions and allow them some softness. I'm...
