Best Set-Up if I want 3 dozen eggs per day

I currently have a 4x8 coop with a 20x8 closed in run for 6 hens (various breeds). These are our personal egg laying hens and pets. This set-up is great for them. However, we are opening a country store in the Spring and we plan on selling a couple dozen eggs a day if not more. Now we will...

My rooster died and now my hens are laying more

I was shocked and sad to find my rooster laying dead in the middle of my chicken run yesterday. I raised him from a chick. However, I went out today to collect the eggs and there were 8 eggs!!! I have 8 hens, but I've been getting about 6 a day. I have 1 Ameraucana that lays green eggs, but...

They won't lay in the nesting boxes!!!

I just added 2 golden comets to my original flock of 6 hens and 1 rooster. My originals have not started laying yet but the 2 new hens started laying about 2 weeks ago. I just added them to my flock on Friday. They have laid eggs everywhere but in the nesting boxes. 2 eggs were even found...

How much should they be eating?

I have 8 hens and 1 rooster. You can see the breeds by clicking the link in my sig panel. I raised 7 of them from baby chicks and I would need to fill up their little 1 gallon feed container about once every 3 days. Last Friday, I added 2 golden comets to my flock that are about 6 weeks older...

What age chicken should I get?

They weren't hard to take care of as baby chicks. I just kept my eye on them to make sure that they weren't eating the pine chips, which none of them did and that they had plenty of water and food. I also gave them some probiotics their first week, which isn't hard. I just added it to their...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

My other chickens can be seen on my "My Chickens" link in my signature. Thanks for the coop compliment. I already had 1 golden comet, but the two that I got came from a large flock of about 30 or so. They are so much more adventurous than my original birds, including the 1 golden comet that I...

For a brooder what kind of bedding do you use?

Yeah I would think paper towels would absorb their mess, but it wouldn't dry out fast enough. Plus, some kind of loose material works way better than just a solid piece of cloth or something. As they move around, they can move that loose material over top of their poop and help to dry it out...

For a brooder what kind of bedding do you use?

I used pine shavings that I bought at tractor supply. I bought the finely shaved bag. there was also a large shavings bag. Just whatever you do, do not use cedar shavings. But anything could work. You just want something that will absorb their excretions and allow them some softness. I'm...
