I just culled a Hen with pecked bleeding vent. :-(

Last week I discovered my 6 red sex links had taken to pecking each others vents, 3 of them were bleeding. I seperated them, cleaned them up the best I could and sprayed all six bottoms with blu-kote. after a couple of days I was able to re-introduce 2 back with the others, but had to keep the...

Incubator confession - poults sick and dying

My observations... The yellow sac thingy at the bottom had a kind of thick gooey yolky substance in it. There was no smell though. The liver is not looking good at all, just an orangey colour, no lesions noted. The black thing in front of the liver had a dark green liquid in it. Is that the...

Incubator confession - poults sick and dying

I have Sulfa MT (its also a coocidiostat). I used the amount the vet put on the label, which is 1 tablespoon of powder in 10 litres of water.

Incubator confession - poults sick and dying

Thanks KikisGirls, I had to put one down today so did a post mortem on it, I dont see signs of lesions in the bowel which would point to cocci. I took a few photos which I can post?

Incubator confession - poults sick and dying

This is a bit long winded but here goes... I retrieved an abandoned nest from my standard bronze hen - she hasn't been having much success. I put the eggs in the incubator and waited for them to hatch 3 weeks later. I should have followed my gut instincts to throw out the eggs as the hen had...

    Coop guineas?

I confine my guineas to the coop from hatch until next Spring. Then I will allow them to free range. I keep mine for bug control and they are awesome at their job. Only problem with them is that they progressively roost in the trees and get picked off by raccoon and owl. My 18 strong flock ended...

    Coccidiosis

I started Amprol treatment this morning after discovering several suspicious poops in the meat kings tractor and also signs that the turkey poults may have it. None of the birds are adcting lethargic as yet, but I'm not taking any chances. I lost so many poults last year to it, it was...

    Hills?

That's a lot of guineas :-O Mine enjoy running around this place. They have 5 acres of pasture to maintain and then they like to explore the woods that surround our property too. Our home is set back from a country road so we don't have to worry about traffic. Here the guineas are...

    Hills?

Awesome developments Rhonda, :-D I think if I was ever to design a new purpose built guinea coop it would have 40 foot wide doors on it so that they know where to go in and out LOL

    Hills?

The big question then, is Henry being aggressive or just a Guinea being a Guinea? Henry is already familiar with the keets, my next step would be to allow them to free range with them. They will sort their own pecking order out - just like chickens do. Except they will behave like grownups with...

    Hills?

GlennLee As far as I can tell from your description Henry is behaving normally. Last year I added 14 keets (5 months old) to my flock of 4 adult guineas. There was and always is a lot of chasing, feather pulling, charging with wings uplifted. I've learned it's all normal behaviour. I introduced...

Catching large quantities of GUINEA FOWL

I agree with this, the only way I can ever catch my guineas is at night. Although currently they are roosting high up in a maple tree at night :-\ Guineas are very smart when it comes to avoiding being caught. They make you mad and wish you had a shotgun lol That said...I love my guineas <3...

would a strong scent deter racoon?

my remaing 8 guineas are the young ones I raised last year. They are still not tame like chickens but they will come running for treats when I call them. I've made sure that there is a light on in the coop until after they are inside and they haven't roosted in the maple tree again. That could...
