Can you find & monitor any Aussie or southern hemisphere threads on BYC? That’s one of the things I did in 2022 when I was up in the night managing pain! @MaryJanet had a thread and a sweet bunch of hens. Also @Ribh was active…I don’t have time to check in specifically with them these days.
:(
Hopefully will catch up on this thread. Saw this because of notification....that comb does not look anything like the pea combs I've seen here with Buckeyes. There are variations, but here they've all been nubbly one way or another - little rows of them, or a middle row bigger, or just a single...
Hey! Normal-sized! It's some others that may be Petite-sized...

I'm noticing Shehnai is very interested in his rooster duties. He seems to be more alert than the pullets. He is more often looking at the sky and standing tall looking around while they mosey about. He gives warning grunts...
Excavation hopefully done, at least the major work. It was exhausting. Now need to get the big coop on the right turned 90 degrees to the right and the little coop on the upper left down to the excavated space and attached once the run extension is finished, which I estimate is one more days...
Heard squawking and saw Shehnai was balancing on a pullet yesterday. There’s been yelping but haven’t seen himgo that far before. Maybe their hormones are starting up? They are 20 weeks old tomorrow.
Working hard on excavating for the second coop further away, run still not finished but DH was...
Correct on the second part, not on the first! The last couple of days have been pretty calm but everything just takes me a long time to do. I'm worried about getting it done before it's miserable weather (my fingers are terrible in the cold). The new Buckeyes do not have a finished covered run...
The big deal on rhododendrons is any honey produced from the flowers, that’s been a problem for humans. I haven’t read anything about the bees being affected.
Haven’t seen any hens or chicks eat fresh or old dead leaves here. It’s not likely anyone would want to, as the toxin produces a burning...
Because they go to bed at roughly the same time, I'm also thinking that far apart is best. Hazel won't have to get close to Shehnai's roost to get to her own. Day before yesterday Shehnai came running back out after he saw Hazel come into view!
Right now both coop/runs are not yet connected to...
Advice on dividing the run and coop placement please? I was thinking of dividing the run fairly evenly in terms of square footage, including each coop's run since they're different.
Goal is to keep Hazel protected with visual blockers and with her BO buddies but inaccessible to Shehnai, but...
The straight-line brain is characteristic here too. Opening the wire mesh door for two hens yesterday: each time she wanted to ultimately go to the right. She can see what she wants. That's the hinge side of the door however. Also, she is standing beak-to-wire. So she must take a few steps...
