Welcome to our little chicken paradise!

The three worst chicken predators: raccoons, raccoons and raccoons. When those critters succeed to get into your coop, it's like the Terminator paid a visit to your hens. (How could this happen? I didn't name any of my hens Sarah Connor!!!) Seriously, raccoons are OK in the wild, but urban...
Earwigs are candy for our chicken too. Anyone who picks up a rock or lifts a piece of wood in our yard will be charged and promptly surrounded by our wild bunch of ladies - better surrender them those earwigs...

I think I've read somewhere that 1 nesting box for every 4 hens is enough. But from my experience, it seems that the ratio doesn't really matter. You can put 2 nesting boxes for every hen if you want and the ladies will still fight every morning to lay in the same one...

To be honest, blue styrofoam has been an important part of the diet of our new pullets last year, and although we tried to put it out of reach, they somehow always managed to find more of it. Some days, they ate so much of the stuff that their poop had a weird bluish color. We realized they had...
Outlaw. Here in the province of Quebec, Canada, the backyard chicken movement has not caught on yet, so we are underground pioneers. We hope that the idea will make its way so that the cities start changing their regulations.

You're right! I remember that our RIR rooster was going "honk-honk, honk-honk" during the period he was just starting to crow. Like you say, probably the voice changing...
Hello everyone,
I am trying to make a list of the different sounds that chicken make, with the english verb, a description of the sound and the usual context the chicken utter those sounds. Here is what I have for now:
Peep, chirp ==> chicks
Crow ==> cock-a-doodle-doo (rooster)
Cluck ==>...
OK, here is a few fresh close-up pics:
VICTORIA, 21 week old Catalan
ALEXANDER THE GREAT, 21 week old RIR
ROXIE, 21 week old EE (breed to be confirmed)
SCARLETT, 21 week old RIR
I'm gonna try next time to take better pics with a camera that has a superior lens and a more powerful...

Poor Pache had recently become a lean mean crowing machine. Non stop, all day long. So we rapidly came to the conclusion that he had to go fast, before we got busted with our underground flock.
After a several days of calling here and there, we finally asked our feed store that...
Since I am a recent member, I am maybe proposing something that you have already done, but here it is anyway.
How about organizing a little avatar contest, where people could propose their favorite member avatars in each of several categories:
- the best of the best
- the funniest
- the cutest...

omg, your avatar is hilarious!
I agree! I had seen your avatar the other day and laughed my a** off!
BTW rizq, I think we could safely go on camping together and bring only one toothpaste tube. Sorry Beefy, you wouldn't be welcome.
Listen, Beefy, if we were still living at the epoch of aluminum foil toothpaste tubes, you would have just made an enemy. During those days (the Middle Ages of the toothpaste tube), I would've burned you at the stake.
But now that we are in the era of the flexible plastic toothpaste tube, I...
Well, here it is at last, episode #2.
Sorry to all for the delay, but I have been dealing with some health problems and then bad weather conditions for photography.
But first, just a few statistics for the making of this story:
Total pictures taken = 985
Number of candidate pictures selected...

Well, TexGardenGirl, trust me, this is as much a mystery to me as for you!
What happened last spring is that my favorite breeder lost a whole batch of incubating eggs because of a power shortage. So he got some chicks from another breeder to be able to offer me some, but he told me he...
