    TSC impulse buy mystery

Your chicks are so cute! Mine turned out to look exactly like yours, so I believe they’re Buff Orps too. Although I wanted Light Brahmas, these girls are some of the friendliest chicks we’ve ever raised, so I’m glad to have them. Thank you all for replying, I really appreciate it!

    Identify the breeds

Beautiful chickens! The 1st looks like an Easter Egger hen. 6th looks like a Barred Rock hen. Not sure of the others, but you do have a frizzle, maybe a Cochin?

    TSC impulse buy mystery

I would love some Orpingtons too! I have them in the brooder with some Cinnamon Queen chicks that are almost the same age. They are no bigger than the CQs. Wouldn’t they be noticeably larger if they are a very large breed like Orpingtons? Or do Orps grow slowly at first? I dunno anything about...

    TSC impulse buy mystery

I was in a hurry when I stopped by TSC for feed, but noticed there were some leftover 49 cent chicks in a tub marked Light Brahma. I didn’t get a good look at them; they were situated the farthest from the viewing area. I’ve thought about adding some Brahmas to my flock, so I told the gal who...

    Sand in the chicken coop?

Oh yes! A poop board with Sweet PDZ is great! I also scoop out the boards with a cat litter scooper everyday after gathering eggs, put the poop in a small bucket, and then dump it into my compost bin. Super easy and keeps the coops much cleaner and better smelling.

    Sand in the chicken coop?

My chickens free range, but I do have covered runs and I keep the feeders in them. I’ve used nothing but sand in the runs for over 5 years and have never experienced any problems or bumblefoot. I do find it easier to keep my small runs clean with sand floors.

How to deal with hawks in the yard?

We have free range bantam and large fowl chickens. All of our roosters were bantams and they were getting killed by the hawks while protecting the hens. We live in a subdivision in a city and I was afraid that a large rooster would crow too loudly and invite complaints. After losing 10 bantam...

Hen was off her eggs for a while- are they all dead now?

This has occurred twice to me before I started isolating my broodies on eggs. The silly Silkies would get confused and sit in the wrong nest box after they did their daily poop, eat and drink. Both times the outside temps were in the mid 40s and the eggs were cold to the touch. To my surprise...

    The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Polish eggs were shipped to me a few mos ago. The seller wrote "fragile" and "hatching eggs" on the carton and included the "Be Kind I'm Alive" sticker. These eggs had the best air cells I've seen compared to previously shipped eggs. Had a late quitter, but the rest of the dozen hatched. My...

    Tennessee

Hello! I live in Lakeland, a small city near Memphis. I want to rehome a couple of 3 mos old purebred French Copper Marans cockerels. They are friendly and came from a breeder, but I have too many roosters. They are free!

Will a dog help deter a fox attack? What type?

We've had very good experiences with mature German Shepherd females for LGDs. We talk to GSD rescue groups about temperament desired and get to "try out" the suggested dogs for a few weeks. Have gotten a wonderful dog that meets our needs every time. Our adopted girls were spayed, 3-4 yrs old...

How many BCM chicks can a Silkie & Serama keep warm?

I bought 14 French Black Copper Marans eggs from eBay and put them in the 'bator. I've never gotten more than 50% hatch rate from shipped eggs, so my plan was to put the chicks under my two broodies, a Silkie and a Serama that are nesting together. These two have been a dynamic duo in the past...

    Serama pullets west TN

I have three 11 wk old traditional Serama pullets. My pet hen hatched and raised only girls. Mom is charcoal gray with a white mottled head and dad has mostly the cuckoo pattern. The pullets look like they have dad's cuckoo pattern. I'm sorry, but I don't ship, so local pick up only.

    West Tennessee Thread

I use TSC's Dumor layer feed and my chickens like it. Their eggs are so tasty that we have friends who will drive 80 min round trip to snag some from us. The yolks are bright orange too. It's either this feed or the free ranging that's helping the gals produce such delicious eggs.

Welcome! :cd Sounds like you're going to have a nice flock. I wish I could have ducks too. A few people have wanted to trade ducklings for my chicks, but hubby is against the idea. We have an inground pool and he thinks ducks will want to spend their time in it instead of a kiddie pool:(
