Wow! I love their little crests! I think they'd have much more developed combs at 4.5 weeks, so I'm voting sapphire pullets and the one WL cock. I don't know what it is about fermented feed but it looks like an explosion of YUCK happened every time they eat! It's been raining for days so mine...
Sounds promising! That's the exact age of the two I have. 1 Black Star x Speckled Sussex & 1 CL x ISA Brown.
They grow up so fast! ;) I love looking at your pictures!
Hoping this little cutie is a pullet. 4 weeks old & still no huge comb! SHE is CL x ISA Brown, so I think eggs should be pretty olive or at least an interesting green! :)
Hmmm...if I did that cross, I don't think I'd wind up with anything that was totally brown. These are F2 because I bred my black star cock(F1) back to some RIR hens. I'm trying to keep the barred, brown chicks, selectively breed them with each other and then I'll start to see some better...
I posted this on another thread but no help telling me if this 4 week old looks like a pullet! The one in back looks like it has a big comb to me. The chix of the one in front will be pure rhodebar!
I'm pretty sure that, while the auto-sexing trait is there, it isn't always definitive. It's comb makes me think roo but the coloring seems too dark and makes me think pullet. My roo (which is the only one I've seen in person) was much more barred and much lighter at this age. Some have more...
This was "Hadji" as a fully grown rooster! It's funny how they change as they grow. He's the fluffy little chick in my avatar and the youngster I was asking about in this thread. Very pretty bird!

I was sold 25 BR chix from cackle hatchery and two turned out to have weird combs. Some people on this site told me that these two are probably crossed with a dominique and that would make a kinda 'in between" comb like mine have. Maybe this is what happened to yours too!
The info about the bsl's vs. barred rocks is correct. When the barred rocks are babies the ones I've hatched all have white dots on their heads. Some dots cover nearly the entire head and others are smaller and more "round". From what I've gathered, you can make a pretty accurate guess which...
That's great! I think it's awesome that you are so concerned about your chickens health. (and curious enough to do an autopsy!) My 4 year old son and I often look at all the parts when I butcher.(I know, gross, right?!) It's a great learning experience and I think it makes him even more...
This EE was supposed to be a pullet too, but at 6 weeks, you can pretty much tell she's a he!! I almost convinced myself that he was just a dominant hen but...come on!!
I think the color pattern on your bird looks pullet-ish and I think it's comb looks pretty small yet.
Hadji @ 6 weeks old!
Mixes are my favorite! I have two bsl sisters and they couldn't look more dissimilar! I think Pick just got more of the RIR color genes, and Peck got a little more of the BR! Mostly black chickens are a shiny combo of iridescent green and purple in the sunshine! They're very beautiful...
